Eh? Edit: sorry Del, we cross-posted; it was the one above yours that I didn't get. Yours makes perfect sense (to me anyway). The thing with hipsters is that they are forever saying, "Oh, I was into X before it was cool," or, "I'm into Band X, I don't suppose you've heard of them."

I only have to look at my car-owning BUDDIES to see how they're a complete cross-section of fashion. You've got your cool young dudes, a few people who look like they've just rolled out of bed, quite a few people who aren't that bothered and just turn up in fleeces/jeans, their close relation "dad-look", some rather stylin' older guys, some "I'm old and don't care" guys, a few who like to wear hi-vis all the time like they're some kind of marshall, a few farm types with their wax jackets and flat caps, plus me who either turns up in a curse word suit on the way home from work or the "smart casual" range from Greenwoods circa 1986.
Basically what I'm saying is that it's completely random. I can't think of a set of friends who have as widely varying fashions as the ones who are into cars, although there is a slight bias towards cheap stuff with oily marks on the sleeves.

Was I was the First Hipster! By which I mean I've always dressed like a tramp and drove around in old bangers. I thought it was because once I finished my apprenticeship in 1995 I had all fashion sense removed and became a full working gadgey, with worn out manky jeans, lumberjack shirt, German army boots and a black dutt (beany hat thing). Was at the time driving a 25 year old Landy as my everyday car. Protohipster status please Ive dressed like Compo since I was a little kid, unlaced army boots, shabby t shirt and god forsaken jeans, and woolly hat not changed and I guess never will, designer stuff aint my bag!

I've looked like a hipster since before it was cool... Of course, it was called "being poor" back in the day! My two retro motors are fine examples of 1980s student transport, the crusty 1300 with a knackered engine and the 1850 with the ruddy great dent from over enthusiastic roundabout action. Not sure if they are considered "cool" by the youth now-a-days, their owner certainly isn't! One day floral shirts, flared jeans and sheepskin coats will be back in fashion, but until then I'm gonna' continue looking like I fell forwards in time from 1978. I reckon younger folk are pretty into the HL spec Dollys in general, they are the thinking man's Mk2 Escort after all. The 1300 and 1500 are a bit fuddy duddy in appearance but with a bit of fettling will see off a badly modified Saxo if one takes pleasure in such infantile things...

I was told that my Toledo was a 'hipster' car the other evening...
I don't mind what my vehicle is deemed as, I drive it as I like old motors, not as I want to come across as anything specific to anyone in particular!
If only I was a hipster...!!!

Yup! I have made the same observation myself. Especially with regard to the same, hackneyed, 'cool' modifications everyone does to their cars.
Ultimately, if they're committed enough to service and maintain an older car, then fair play to them. However, I can soon see the fad wearing thin once big bills and unreliability start looming - which they will unless you look after an old motor.

I've had an old car before I heard about the concept of hipsterness. I guess from the outside I could be taken for a hipster, it doesn't bother me that much. After all they are supposed to be all about style and everything, I only see it as approbation of a choice I've already made.
I wouldn't be surprised if a fair few of those newly converted to old bangers for style reasons get properly into their cars. Old cars, you love them or you hate them, but they do get under your skin when you're around them for too long.

I think that if anyone buys an old car purely for image or fashion reasons, they quickly get bored with the constant breakdowns and repairs required and move them on. I've seen it so many times with old VWs.
Fact is, though, old cars are cool. Just look at all the videos on MTV, they are full of classic motors.
