weve had this arguement at work before and i think a car will fail its mot with bigger tyres on the front.you have to have the bigger tyre/wheels on the rear.unless its an old citroen ds where it is legal to have bigger fronts as thats how they were made.i think total plums.

as long as the rolling diameter is the same on the drive wheels i don't think it matters (ul put more stress and overwork the diff if different sizes on the drive wheels)
mot wise all four tyres have to be road legal, i don't think they check the sizes

As stated, factually, to satisfy the mot the car has to have matching tyre sizes across an axle. Front to back can be whatever you want. Heck, fit 12"s to the rear and 22"s to the front if you want but not side to side. Why is this thread still going?!

www.motuk.co.uk/manual_410.htm -that should put a stop to this thread ive had my car mot'd before with 17's on 3 corners n a full size 15 on the rear (fwd car) n it wasnt even questioned let alone advised on or failed on

Reasons for Rejection, point 1a:
"1a. One tyre is of a different nominal size or aspect ratio to any other on the same axle."
As said, the size has gotta match side to side, but not front to rear. I'm sure a fair few have gone through mismatched, but they technically shouldn't have.

Sorry for being negative but robin is quoting the exact RFR that should have been applied. It just slipped through the net, it happens.

There was a panel van in the 80s with bigger front wheels than rears. Japanese, think either Toyota or Mazda. I remember them having small double wheels on the back with a larger flat wheel on the front, the idea i suspect being lesser rear wheelarch intrusion.

the plan was to use the bigger tyres on the front so higher gearing =more mpg its a front wheel drive daily. With that small a change in size you wont notice any better fuel economy and the speedo will be out if differant to the normal tyre size ? whats the normal tyre size ? I've played around with 165/70/13 165/80/13 165/65/14 and 165/80/14 You find a small difference between 70 profile and 80 on the 13's, and then another jump with the 80/14's Not as big as you would think - when you put the different tyres next to each other there's a big difference in the diameter.

That clown is totally getting the jail for breaking the little known and unrecorded law around real wheel sizes... I tried some jiggery-pokery with tyre and wheel sizes on my old Lexus to improve the fuel consumption after I gave it to my special lady friend. I didn't get any joy with the borrowed smaller wheels and tyres and I suspected early doors that in buying new wheels and tyres of a theoretically more economical size, I might be spending money that I would never get back. I secured a wine bottle cork on the underside of the accelerator pedal. That gave a significant improvement, which confirmed my suspicions that the problem was driving style.
