Just FYI, I had to replace my Snap-On cordless in 2010 after my workshop got broken into and it got stolen. I just looked at the invoice and it was £455 + vat back then!
So yes, they are very expensive new but they are worth the money IMO as they last for years and are very capable. You have to remember that they are designed for proper garage/industrial use rather than DIY mechanics so you'd expect them to be expensive. Even my local tyre place uses them which is a testament to their durabilty.
I don't think I'd bother with a mains powered one as it really limits how useful it is. It's very handy being able to go outside and swap wheels on a car or take it down the breakers with you. I usually carry mine on trips, especially if towing. I had a trailer tyre blow out on the M25 once but with the cordless I had it changed in under 5 mins and was on my way.
