We recently purchased a opel manta believed to be a manta B with the longer boot, we bought it as a shell without id as where we found it was a scrap yard and apparently the car had been declared scrap. Since we have purchased ID from a well known manta breaker. The car itself comes with the following: 2 doors 1 boot lid Front and rear bumper (need repairs) Front and rear axles (so it's rolling) diff included What can come with it at extra cost: 2.0 GTE engine £70 Recaro interior £140 Opening quarter glass £40 need space ASAP so must go 07854350892 Corey

what do you mean purchased id? does it have a v5? From the information given; the car is scrapped, he has bought a log book / ID from a breaker off another car.

So essentially the shell is useless then as it has no id and cannot get one due to being registered as scrapped. Only good for parts this is unless anyone is particularly into ringing. Why on earth would anyone buy an id off another car, it is just a worthless piece of paper!

Why on earth would anyone buy an id off another car, it is just a worthless piece of paper! Because you then put the ID on another car - nobody gets hurt. You're confusing 'ringing' with 'murder'. It's saving a car of which there aren't many about. This is rife in the Land Rover community, nobody is really that bothered. As long as any future buyer knows, who cares, it wouldn't bother me. A car is a car.

You are confusing something legal with something illegal then! I know perfectly well what goes on but it is illegal, end of story.
Slightly different to murder though, good point.

As above yes, cars original I'd was scrapped as it was destined to be a breaker, until it was asked to be bought from owner previous to me, I then bought it along with iD from the same breaker who scrapped the car, have all details if you wish to check up with this breaker to make sure it's the truth, he's a well known manta breaker in north east
This is why the car is cheap, if it's gone by Friday you can take car as rolling shell for £350

If a car has been registered as scrap which you say this one has and it has lost its original vin then it cannot be put back on the road. I am surprised they have agreed to sell the car to someone and even more surprised they sold an id on its own knowing it is going to be put on this car. I am sure you are very honest but what you are trying to do is illegal, I know you say that is why it is cheap but it cannot be put on the road legally. All it is good for is parts so i would try getting your money back that way. It could make a track car obviously but it cannot see the road again.

Its a crime with no victim, so its only really a crime to folk who can't see beyond the letter of the law. 350 is a barg if its not rotten!

Like I have said it needs rear arches sorting and 6" on either side of chassis rail where it bends down out of engine bay, nothing majorly bad
The numbers on floor have been cut through by the breaker who sold the car so nothing could go back to him, it is a bargain for £350 and if the id wasn't putting people off I would be wantin almost double

I think you may have been a bit honest with your ad for an open forum, it might have been better advertising as a shell and parts rather than a project.
As for ringing being common practice that doesn't make it right.
From personal experience it doesn't feel like there is no victim when you are the one left with a vehicle that can't be MOT'd, taxed, registered or insured and all you all are left with is a load of spares bolted together.

What is illegal about it?
What specific law is being broken?
What crime is being committed?

The illegal part (Fraud) comes if the rebuilt car is sold as the reg no. on the ID as that doesn't correspond to the actual vehicle, i.e. numbers don't match. Corey has stated that he is not selling the shell as the one stated on the i.d and it is up to the buyer what they do with it so has no intent to defraud anyone. The i.ds on ebay get removed as selling them can constitute an offence as they are supplying articles for use in fraud although proving intent may be difficult. So no crime is being committed?
But, somebody, sometime in the future, might put the ID and bodyshell together (not a crime - worst case scenario, it'll get a "Q" plate or current equivalent) and might sell it, and sometime further in the future an owner may possibly not tell a purchaser that it has been reshelled?
Surely you've more to worry you?

This lot AVCIS in association with some landy forums and pistonheads monitor ebay, gumtree etc and do follow up sales Good, and with the police's limited resources, they would surely have a lot to go on on a forum where users don't use their real names, cars without any reg number in the photo and no actual law being broken in the thread (the seller is selling what equates to a body shell and ID). It is up to the buyer to do what they want to do with the car.
