Thanks for the link re-posting Xenoside, thanks ChasR Quite a lot of little jobs done now. The sidelights had to come off so that the wings could go to the sprayshop. However all the wires had been soldered so that held things up. As the rear wheels were off I took the opportunity to treat (clean and condition) the leather gaitors covering the leaf springs. One of the grease nipples was loose so I had to untie the string underneath, refasten the grease nipple and rewrap the spring then relace the string........The welding wire loop acts as a suitable needle to pull the string through! I think that, with the spring leaves covered in grease, it makes them flex easily ( no "Stiction" compared to dry leaves?) to give a very good ride and the friction shock absorbers can work to their best effect.

neat solution actually, and yeah i agree its to make the ride more supple

Hi Darren Well I did quite enjoy my session with tight leather and lacing..... Anyway ..... I also had the chassis reinforcement plates cut and bent at a local fabricators, so I drilled the bolt hole and put a coat of paint on them - I'm doing both sides even though only one side had cracked. They are just placed on the chassis rail for the paint to dry.

More done today as I put on the new axle straps, then ground out the chassis crack and welded it. Inside the top edge I fitted the reinforcement plate and got two good long welds either side of the engine mount. I took off the lower engine mount on the other side and discovered the beginings of a crack on that side, so the reinforcement plate on that side was certainly needed! The chassis can now go into the paint shop for prepping and paint.

Back in action after a short holiday (Iceland is very nice!). One little job was to remake the seat adjustment blocks as the originals were a bit tatty. A block of wood with 6 large holes, cut in two and covered in leather, then the top plates screwed in position ready to go onto the floor. Taken to Moss - and the bodyshell is half trimmed.

Beautiful. So much 'handmade' in one of these cars (even when they were new i guess).
Great that you and your team have the skills and the contacts to put it all right.

With advice from Moss a bit more has been done on the chassis reinforcement. The weld has been run right up to the engine mounting block and the ground back to flush. two holes have been drilled through the chassis rail each end of the plate and big plug welds put in place and smoothed. Now getting ready for paint. Apparently the factory Le Mans racers also suffered from chassis cracks under the engine mounts - so they put a long piece of angle iron inside the chassis - hot riveted it and gas welded along its length - however they also needed to alter the lower mounting block. I wonder why they didn't "Box" the chassis rails?

Not sure if the pictures will reappear because there is a technical problem on the website (Rodnsods) that I use for hosting. Anyway the chassis has been mostly painted and the bodyshell is nearly ready for collection - Progress!

Problem with the pictures is that they're hosted on rodsandsods and probably can only be viewed on that site/if you're a member of that site.

Thanks IDY.....needless to say I'm more of a spanner twirler rather than a Bits and Bytes ace! Hoping that others can now see the last picture - and don't worry about the smoke effect - the trimmer was puffing on an E Cig! The bodyshell is now back next to the chassis and once the last bit of painting is done re=assembly will start.
