I've had 3 x SIIA & 2 x SIII (as well as Defender, Disco and 3 x Range Rover). Without spending ages moaning lets say I don't want to go there again - and I'm a Land Rover enthusiast ! Paul h That's a shame! I've never found 2s or 3s to be much cop really, too many have been completely monged. Well sorted 80"s are great fun though, would highly recommend a test drive in one if possible. They were built right too - before I re-designed my chassis with a barrier mine was on it's original, 61 year old chassis. Are all Land Rover products off the table? An early 2 door Range Rover could be pretty nice, if a little pricey.

An early 2 door Range Rover could be pretty nice, if a little pricey. I've had 2 x 2 door Range Rovers. Both suffered the normal rot but biggest problem is nobody now produces any repair panels for this model so makes restoring difficult. As I originally said I've been drawn to the P38 version for ages and they are now at a price where you can afford to modify and gently abuse one off road. AFAIK the Achilles' heel is the central computer - BeCM (BODY (electrical) CONTROL MODULE). I've always fancied taking a P38 with sound body and fitting a Disco 300TDi along with coil springs instead of the BMW engine and air suspension. Air con can be disconnected, central locking and electric windows rewired (thought aftermarket controllers if necessary) leaving the just the instruments to be sorted before the BeCM redundant. Another idea was to replace the Viscous coupling on a 3 door Freelander with a selectable RWD box (modified from, say, a Suzuki item). In fact just a FWD Freelander could be worth considering with front LSD / diff lock or even just Fiddle brakes. Then there is the VW Iltis which you can see is a later development of the Munga - I also like the early Merc G Wagon but they go for high prices and cost a fortune to maintain. Don't think I could live with the looks of a UMM Alter They always look like the result of a weird roll over that just squished the front panels ! Paul H

lada niva? earliest ones are 79 or so though so not tax exempt, also getting thin on the ground these days ,could pick up a very tidy one for 1k a few years ago, but rarely see them now> i loved mine was great off road, and ok on if you could look past the build quality issues xD wish i had finished repairing it instead of losing interest and selling it for next to nothing saying that can still buy them new....

£3000 buys you a ready to repair 101
I've been looking for long enough.
The P38 isn't really as bad as the horror stories make out, I have a few friends with them modified to different degrees and they have been ok in the last couple of years I've owned my Discoverys.
Or instead of a P38 why not look at a Td5 Discovery a good one can be had at £3000 its ready to use out of the box be it daily or a dabble off road, my Td5 has never seen mud and is never likely to, where as the D1 V8 I have I started getting it ready for the muddy stuff when someone made me aware of just how clean it was and was to good to butcher and bash about so I have recently started thinking about either swapping or selling it as it just sits there like it has for the last 8 months.
How about some of the older 4x4 pick ups?

Funny this should be mentioned, having read Auto Italia magazine (now last months issue), it had an article on these. The earlier version was known as the F.A.R.T. Break, honestly.

Friend has a 101 radio version that is converted to a camper. No way could I live with one on a regular basis however he uses it as his everyday vehicle ! FWIW there were a few concept Forward Control Land Rovers built on the SWB chassis. During heavy braking the rear wheels could come off the ground and that was one of the reasons why project cancelled. Also during a difficult time for both Jeep and Land Rover during the 1950's they considered a joint venture. A prototype was built with a Land Rover body on a Jeep CJ5 chassis. Unfortunately the design was flawed - the Land Rover body relied on a rigid chassis whereas the Jeep flexed a little so the end result was a very flexible vehicle. Luckily both companies fortunes changes and the idea was forgotten. I've got a pic somewhere but it just looks like any other SII Land Rover. Paul h

The Mutt is interesting - forgot about them. To me it looks like a grown up Moke ! I used to have an early B reg Steyr Puch Panda 4x4 and that went everywhere, and more, that a Land Rover would go. Biggest problem was rot - I broke it up due to it being so bad at 7 year old ! Then parts were unique to the 965cc version and made it an expensive vehicle to maintain. Good fun though. Wonder if the later 1.0 version is just as good off road ? I'd quite like a Suzuki SJ but they are either expensive or rusty. Had a look at Jimny but somehow they don't have the same appeal as the SJ. I'm not actually searching for a vehicle - just exploring the options Tax exempt is the original reason for the start of the thread but not essential. Under 1549cc so lower VED band would be just as interesting as tax exempt. Paul H
