Rust preventative paint. Which ones?

Just a quick question to ask you guys which rust preventative paint do you use on your chassis and whatnot.  Iv been using POR 15 which is good but as my car is something of a long term project, ie do a bit here, a bit there I find it likes to form a bloody solid layer in the can.  Which itself is a pain in the backside but also a heck of a lot is wasted because of it, Just a big waste of money.

Just wanted your opinions, if there are as good or even better products that can be opened, used and then left on the shelf for a couple of months and be used again with little waste.

Why don't you tip something in the can on top of the paint to keep the air out like paraffin ?

I've used Ronseal No Rust with good effects. I have boat trailers that I used to have to paint every year, in 2007 I painted them with No Rust - and they haven't been painted since. It's not one of the fancy 'technical' products on the market, but as they say, it does what it says on the tin. And it keeps OK in the tin - use celly thinners to clean up.



My Viva is also a long term project - so having something I can open, do a bit, and seal again works for me.

Cheers guys, its not like its a desperate thing anyways, she wont be on the road anytime soon (unfortunately). I use to cover the tin with cling film then hammer the lid back on (literally). Just don't like to waste money like that.

jotun jotamstic . 2 part epoxy primer , sticks like poo to a blanket and dries rock hard

Bondaprimer then top coat of your choice

You can buy POR15 in packs of 6 little cans, for exactly the reason that it likes to go hard in the can once opened. So even if you don't finish a whole can at a time you still only risk a small amount going hard. I did that when I restored my Rx7 and I was very happy with the result and how it kept the rust away.

Store the tin upside down,so hardens at the top, works on most paints

when you read all the comments above it seams that por15 is the dogs curse word so looks like you need to store it as suggested above,also might need to consider if it will mix/not react if you use something else.

The metal protection paints sold by Aldi & Lidl have a good reputation from the guys on www.mig-welding.co.uk/forum/
I bought 8 tins to do my ramps, axle stands, trolley jack, etc when last on offer

If you use POR-15 store it in the fridge as it lasts longer without going off. Worked for me the last time I used it, was able to keep a tin useable for a couple of months. I must admit though the next time I buy some i`ll get a pack of 6 small tins if i`m not going to use a lot at once.

Yeah have seen the 6 pack but not exactly cheep. The main problem I have is it could be months on end before I get back in the garage now (was going to sort it this summer), what with being out of work so the car will have to take a back seat for a while or if things get really bad possibly sold which would suck.

But thanks for the info anyways, if an when I get to getting her back on the road Ill probably look towards the Ronseal stuff, as it seems to be inexpensive compared to others.

At present my local Johnson paints are clearing out there stock of rustoleum as they are going onto their own range - just got 4 litres at £5 p/l, am assuming its a nationwide thing
