Little Cortina getting a transmission service today. Had a few dings and dents so obviously put through it's paces still! Also still registered properly, and not on club plates. The centre console had a big sign over it that said 'LUBRICANTS'. Not sure what that was about, but I took it's advice and stopped in and bought some beer on my way home.

Saw a pretty mint Ford Bronco complete with awesome old retro decals down the sides with all the stripey swirly bits (descriptive, I know). Unfortunately it was surrounded by a swarm of cyclists so couldn't get a shot of it. Seemed a bit weird having a cyclist owning a big gas guzzler, though. I did, however, manage to get a photo of this yesterday in between all the craziness that was going on. Apparently my phone decided to potato, though. Ended up helping the old fella when I got back inside. Was chasing a new rad cap as he'd forgotten to tighten the old one. His missus was dressed up all nice and he was just in cargo shorts and a tee shirt, haha. Wonder if he was just dropping her somewhere.

Well, the order of photos on this update is all out of whack, but oh well! There was this. Owned by a younger fella who was doing a rolling semi-resto on it. Just fixing up the rusty bits and not worrying much about paint, etc. He had another one he showee me photos of that's having a proper tidy up done. From memory it was going to end up on bags. I know I've posted this before, but it's always a joy to see, and sounds amazing, of course. And I think it has new wheels, at least? Bit of old Holden/Vauxhall wagon boxiness. Now this... I was going to post in abandoned, but my brother has finally sold it and it's no longer in the garage as it has been for the last 10+ years... Got it all running reasonably well again, paints a bit rough and it's got a big rust patch on the drivers door but a new skin would fix that. But no interest in keeping it anymore apparently. So off it went! Space for the Minor downstairs now when it's back on the road. This has been shown before, but I got to ride home in it yesterday night from Korean Fried Chicken. There's not much room in the back! This was miiiiint. '77 Chrysler. Bit of Jaaaag Cool old Volvo. This... I heard. Then talked to the owner inside, went outside and had a look. And then asked him how he was doing, going around with a large obvious obstruction to his view and the cops' obvious displeasure. His response was that he'd drive it until they said something to him. And on that, that's me up to date I believe. Will try and keep an eye out for anything interesting in Japan, but we'll be busy hurtling down frozen mountains most of the time! Cheers, Matt

Well, where to begin? I guess in Japan, as that's where I said I'd be! Almost the only interesting thing I saw this trip. Spent most of our time either travelling or in Asahikawa which is a little big town, kind of like Brisbane. Not much of interest there apart from the snow! I did see something like an old Volvo similar to the red one above bombing around in the snow, but it pulled in to a service station and I couldn't grab a photo of it on the way past. There was also some form of old Japanese coupe in mint condition in a car showroom but again, not able to get close enough for a photo. Back to work. This is owned by the girl who is my 'sandwich artist'. I see it regularly but haven't been able to get a decent pic of it due to cars being parked beside it. The rising sun is new since I left for Japan, amusingly. It is very clean and well loved. Had a guy come in asking about bits for a GTV. Didn't think much of it as the bits he was asking for implied that it wouldn't be outside, and when I asked, he confirmed. Walked outside later to see him about to drive off in this one instead. So... two? D: Typical American overheating. This... was awesome. Not only is it a cool car, but it's clearly just being driven to be enjoyed. The other side, the panels were even more off colour. The rear window was being held in with yellow race tape. It was just cool. Also the guy who owns it works for Supercheap, somewhere. And lastly, this Fairlane has showed up in the unit, blocking me in and restricting my work space! Spotted some cool stuff while hunting for steel yesterday as well, but traffic flow was inconvenient. Cheers, Matt

The Celica is class. Over here it would be lowered over a set of Superlites nearly before it got off the boat.

Yeah, extreme lowering doesn't happen so much over here. For two reasons. Firstly, the police cracked down on it heavily a while back and now you stand out too much so easy to pick up a fine. Secondly, our roads are goddamn terrible! A few years ago there was a big blitz on lowered cars down the Gold Coast, and pretty much if you couldn't fit a coke can under the car, you were going to get a fine. Well, while I'm here, might as well throw up a couple of pics. This nice Valiant has been having some work done for the last couple of days down the shed. While I was working on the Minor I was hearing some aggressive throttling. When I wandered back up the top to use the pan brake, it had moved. The black patches of rubber on the ground imply that it works properly again. Cheers, Matt

I bet that was a Toyota Cressida. They look just like a 164 and nothing like them at all. They also look a bit like a Mustang 2.

No it definitely wasn't a Cressida. It was more big and...bubbly/boxy like the 164, but shorter. I wish I'd been able to swerve across three lanes of ice and traffic to follow it in to the servo.

Searching the memory banks to try and think of anything that might be similar to a 164, that's not a Cressida, likely to be seen in Japan and smaller. The closest I can imagine at the moment are these two. Obvious lights, large separate grille, a little bit boxy and a little bit curvy... they're not really anything alike but they could seem similar if you only got a quick glimpse through traffic. Mazda RX3 Toyota Publica It's also a great excuse to post pictures of nice Japanese cars.

I am ok with this. That publica looks the right shape for sure. It was also through a light snowing, just to make it extra difficult haha.
Definitely not an RX3. There's another one being obnoxious around work at the moment I just snagged some photos of it today.

I generally don't stop as much to take photos of the Australian stuff as its all over the place haha. I've been making an effort to change my ways as obviously you lot see more British cars and don't need me to show them. Guy wth a nice Falcon ute I took a photo of the other day came in today for some stuff for a 54 Desoto. I told him he'd have to bring it to work when its back on the road. Hopefully the Austin Landcrab another regular has is being turned over today, so that'll be in shortly.

I remember being surprised at the amount of old Australian tin there was knocking around in the middle of Melbourne when I was working there. Sounded fantastic burbling between the buildings of the CBD!

While I'm screwing around with photos, here's some more! Before-mentioned ute. Wish I'd taken a photo of it head on. Looks pretty tough for a 40yo one owner. Heard some brraaaap'ing going on. Snuck out just before we closed to take a look. Waiting on the auctions, I think. And a little something from Japan I found while editing some shots. If you'd like to see a few other random shots from Japan, including owls! Then take a look here. Japan February 2016Speaking of Japan... I may have bought some tickets for $AU480 return on Thursday. I'm not addicted, I swear! Also, I'm encouraging others based in Australia (or New Zealand, it's basically the same place, right? ) to add their own spots to this thread if you want. Our variety is a bit different from what's seen in the UK, and they should see more of it! I want to see more of it! I just work most weekends which rules out car meets. Speaking of! Rootes and Humber meet in Stanthorpe on the 19th! Cheers, Matt

Yeah, the cops probably won't take "But officer! Did you SEE that beast?" as a valid excuse. I need to work out a way to stroll around Moss St and take photos of all the old tin without attracting unwanted attention to myself, haha. I saw like 6 cars in a 1km drive this morning before 8am, just between the brew shop and work.

These came in today. These wheels... I am jealous. Not many around over here. Sadly this was owned by an absolute curse word of a person. Legitimately thought that herself and the rest of the 'Baby Boomers' actually made Australia better for the next generations... HARDCORE ..thought you might be a fan..

It may well have been a 162, I saw one in Japan. I even saw one in Taiwan along with a 262 and they didn't have their industrial boom until the 70s.
