I have been noticing the heater in my 1996 Audi A6 2.6 V6 (lots of 6's)getting gradually less effective over the past month of so to the point that heat now only comes out when I rev the engine.
At idle there is no heat what so ever.
Water pump was new last year and with the air intake off I can get to the heater pipes and they are both warm.
Could my heater matrix be clogged up and if so whats the best way to clear it out?
Should I open both pipes and run clean water from a hose through it to clear it out or is there a better technique? Is there a chemical flush that would be usefull or just stick to clean water?
Thanks for your help,
Dave.

Heater matrix failure is a common problem on these, any traces of coolant under the carpet in the front passenger footwell?

Carpet is completely dry and I'm not losing coolant.

I had a similar issue with my A4, it turned out to be the thermostat stuck open. Mine never fully warmed up and drank a lot of fuel. After I swapped it out for a new one it was perfect. Does yours get up to temp at all?

Does yours get up to temp at all? Temp sits at 90 as it always has and I'm sure it got a thermostat when the waterpump was changed (I chickened out doing it myself).

Is the valve that controls the flow of hot coolant through the heater opening fully?

Is the valve that controls the flow of hot coolant through the heater opening fully? I'm not entierly sure if its working or where to look for it. Flushed the matrix today with fast flowing water fron a garden hose. I spent a good 45 minutes switching between pipes so that it was flowing in both directions but no joy, its still roasting hot when on the move but goes completely cold at idle.

Must admit I know nothing about your car, but does it have climate control? And could that be playing up?
Cold at idle does sound like the cooling system is working OK, might be more likely to overheat at idle?
