I am very new to car electrics - It took me over 2hrs to wire in a 'lights on' buzzer today!
My Cortina has an interior light with a 3 position switch - off & always on work fine but I cannot get it to work in the 'doors open' position?
There is a single red wire on the bulb side which is always live, and two brown wires on the switch side - in the always on position, the bulb side is live and the switch is on one side but when you switch it to doors open, there is no live on switch side??
Is it a case of renewing the door pins? I switched the browns over and it still worked the same so I know the switch is ok?
I am so confused!

The switch 'chooses' an earth path. There is a permanent 12V in, a permanent ground (one switch position) and a ground created by the door switches (the door position). This diagram is pretty much it: Off (N/C) means no contact, the switch will be in a dead zone. Make sense? I would expect the door switches to be duff. If you put the switch in the door position and earth the wiring to the pin switch, the light should come on.

I'd try cleaning up the door pin switches and where the mounting screw fits into the body - that's the earthing point in the circuit. I had trouble with a door pin not working - took it out to find previous owner had fitted a kind of plastic insert in the hole the screw goes into, completely isolating it from the body

Undo and redo up the door pin screws, the int light earths through the screws and rust gets in between the screw and the A pillar, at worst you may need some new door pins.

I would pull the terminal off the back of the door pin and then try earthing it against a known-good earth. If necessary run an earth wire direct from the negative terminal on the battery. Might as well test all door pins while you're at it.
Connecting the door pin wire to earth will tell you whether it is the door pin or the wiring between.
