Seeing the other thread about a £500 budget, which would only pick up some rotters at best, I decided £2k is a far more realistic budget for some cheap laughs.
So, be it a standard car that's capable in its own right, or something that can be had for little that can be turned into a handful within the budget, what would you buy?
First one that popped into my head was a Saab 9000 with the 2.3 lump, can be had for under a grand, 3" down pipe + td04 + remap might be a stretch but would be a good 280bhp!

I'm biased as I have owned one: Alfa 916 GTV V6. 220bhp, lovely noise. FWD though...

Perhaps a little optimistic that you'd even find one, and with prices on the up you could probably only get a bit of a snotter for £2k, but a BX GTi is a rapid thing and if you find someone selling one who doesn't really know what they've got you could be on to a quick way to lose your license.

Didn't know such a thing existed, that looks cool!

^I picked up a bit of a snotter for £100 last year. Ran, drove, stopped and even good working suspension.^. You'll definitely get a good one within budget. Even a 16V one. Post Apocalyptic BX Look Yo!

Lexus LS400, good for 170mph+ if you get the limiter removed on the ECU.
Not bad for a sub £1000 car.

The adverts are wrong, they were north of 250BHP out of the box and another 10HP after the facelift. Quick, but not RAPID cars. I've been looking for an early one myself as they're an utter bargain (especially when you take into account the fact early ones qualify for classic insurance)

Same with the E38 V12 beemer, limited to 155, factory 326bhp but mine has (supposedly) been remapped to 360, 0-60 in 6 seconds, not bad for a 2.1/4 ton barge, corners are no fun though. don't know what the V12's are capable of but there is a video on Youtube of a de-restricted 850i, it's in KPH but still look's he's doing a fair bit more than 170mph

Always liked those [smart ar5e coat on] Incedently the Oldsmobile Tornado was V8 and front wheel drive way back in the late 60's (may have been the early 70's ?), used an odd chain drive transmision too Also check out a Lancia Thema 8.32 [/smart ar5e coat off]

I bet you can't get a Thema 8.32 worth having for under £5k...
