Just very occasionally, I've heard a loud rattle when starting the Granada from cold, which stops very quickly and there's a squealing belt at low revs. But today, the rattle was persistent (although not consistent), battery light was flashing on and off, belt squeal was also persistent and power steering is heavy at some points. After a quick look under the bonnet, it looks like a vibration from the crankshaft pulley at the front of the engine. Is this likely to be just the pulley being loose, or something more dramatic (and therefore expensive)?

It's sounds to me as if your harmonic balancer may be kaput if you have one!
Essentially the inner part that bolts to the crack and the outer part where the belt goes can be joined by rubber. If that's knoackered and slipping it can cause a whole manner if strange happenings, but some advice don't replace with some after market solid one as these can cause even more issues, replace like for like imo
But these are on cars I've worked on and my experience having never touched a car like yours I cannot be sure!
A way to check is crawl undercar with a prybar and gently see if the outer part has excessive play!

I've seen mention of that being a known issue on the 2.5 diesel engine, so it's certainly a possibility.

Where's the best place to get one? Local factors can't get them, Burton's don't have them, none on eBay (unless I'm missing something). Would one of the companies that advertise in Classic Ford or Retro Ford be the best bet? It looks like I have an N9 engine according to the VIN plate, Wiki says there's N9C/N9E/NSE/N9D. Is there a major difference between these?

Is there a major difference between these? Tried calling your local ford dealership? they will also be able to help with what part fits. Worst case scenario is that they will be NLA.

I've had 'issues' with them in the past so they will will be the last resort.

After two hours on the phone and online, it looks like Specialised Engines in Grays may have come to my rescue. Bit concerned of the apparent rarity of the engine, a number of comments along the lines of 'can't remember when I last saw one of them', which doesn't bode well for anything else I might need in the future. Oh for a driveway/garage where I could store a spares car!

Back to square one SE's system apparently says they have three. They can't find any of them. Now relying on responses from those 'we ask all the suppliers' websites.

Still can't understand why you don't try calling the original manufacturer of your car's franchised parts department and asking if they can still be got it's gonna be the easiest way to get one.

I think I'm going to have to now. They've just been so incredibly useless in the past that I really don't hold out a lot of hope...

I'll sort the part and finis code out later for you, so you can go armed but TBH i think the sierra owners club is the best bet for a S/H one/ cant find one at all on M/C for the DOHC ? i'll try the microfiche in the morning when i get to me yard

You are a gentleman and a scholar After some extensive searching, I *think* the part number might be 1020834, but would be nice to get it confirmed.

Looks like GS Escorts have come to the rescue, with a s/h pulley from an XR4x4. Touch wood that it is right, but for £20 posted, I'll take the risk!

I've spoken to a breaker in Charlton that reckons he might have one. I'll pop down there at the weekend, then hit the forums after that. I've found that the part number is 6189834
