I would have thought the reason behind using estate tail lamps would have been to provide a usable boot opening. Otherwise with the combo of the hatch fixed rear lamp panel and the tonneau deck , you'd have been left with an elongated post box to get your shopping through. Perhaps it's an urban myth I've been sucked into. This is absolutely true, it not just the tail lamps its the 2 door estate platform throughout.

That is one reason why it makes more sense, maybe volkswagen should have used the mk1 jetta as the convertible base instead of the golf On the other hand I would like a corado

No it's a myth, appart from the lights everything else is differant and a one off for the cab appart from the boot floor which is a saloon boot floor not an estate, even the rear bumpers have differant mounting points to both the saloon and estate.

I know its not strictly a hatchback made into a convertible, but Toyota did make some of these, and I do like the shape

I have always wondered why no Mk2 Golf Cabriolet was made 'in-house'...?! The Mk1 is a gem and the Mk3 looked great but it's a great shame the Mk2 can't join the drop-top party!!!

That Mk2 looks soooooo right. Wouldn't be too hard to recreate with a Mk2 shell, Mk1 cabrio top and a Jetta rear end?

The Skoda MTX Roadster (Favorit Cabrio) isn't a bad looker with the roof down... All goes horrendously wrong when the clouds come out though...
