Yes, I saw that this morning, bless Sam I'm sure that he's missing it! 
I'm building a new engine at the moment, the standard engines are Renault Cleon as fitted to mk1 Renault 5s. 1.3 as standard in the GL version.
I have found a low mileage Vollvo 340 1.4 version which will bolt straight in and am fitting the guts from a R5 Gordini into the new block which is a sporty 1.4 crossflow head version of the Cleon and makes 93bhp as standard.
There are a few issues to sort out, the engine in the Renault 5 is mounted back to front so i need to move the water pump etc to the other end of the engine and the Gordini cam needs machining to fit into the Volvo block. All been done before though and detailed instructions are out there on various Renault forums.
The cam is away being done at the moment and next week I hope to swop the pistons and liners between the blocks.

These look like such a laugh, I'd love one. Could you convert one to manual using a Volvo 340 transaxle? I know the CVT is half the point of owning one like.

I've read that you can fit theV 340 manual running gear but it was 3rd or 4th hand info.
The clever gearbox is kind of the whole reason for the car though and although I've never had an auto classic before I wouldn't change it. I expect it to be quite quick once done as the CVT is very good at keeping the engine in the sweet spot and it's fairly lively with only 57 horses.

Took the little car to a local show last weekend, I've lowered it at the front on the torsion bars, I haven't fitted the rear lowering blocks yet.
Spent a few hours polishing it with a machine and it came up a treat for 36 year old paint

The suspension rebuild is finished, new front and rear shock absorbers, rubbers and rear lowering blocks fitted.
