I've had it back for a few days now. Work includes: All new cylinder head gaskets New valve guides Lots of new seals/bolts etc Carrera GT DITC ignition fitted What a difference! The CGT DITC apparently advances the timing off boost more, and it makes it a lot more drivable. There's still a big kick when the turbo comes in, but it's not flat off boost like it was before. Of course, a top end rebuild will be helping too. It's a fast car now, 2nd gear in the damp sees the rear wheels spinning, if it's wet, change into 3rd and do it all again. In 5th gear on the motorway it's just starting to pull when you need to slow down. Speed isn't everything though, and there's plenty of whooshing sounds at low revs as you look over that bonnet scoop. Check the mirrors, see the arches. If you're lucky, change up and get a bang from the exhaust. Not too often to be annoying, but enough to entertain. I've been driving around the lanes like Walter Rohrl! It's just fantastic to be back in a 924 again...

Oh my, this is one beauty of a car.
Being an 80's kid, the flares, understated yet dishy wheels and the sinister colour ticks all my boxes.
I am jealous!!!!!

Wait, when did the seats happen? They look like the early style sports seats too!, like the GT had, aside from the colour.
Looks great!

Beautiful car! And this one is nice in black and red touches. BTW, if you don't manage to drive the car for a year, and then even the next, even that would be considered normal I have not been able to drive my two project cars since I got them, first one six years ago...

In good company at Bristol Queen Sq. earlier: MOT tomorrow and then getting the headbolts re-torqued. A substantial coolant leak developed on the way home, looks like it's coming out of the big hose from the bottom of the radiator.

You must be tearing your hair out over it now! Why so many problems in such a short period of time? Self inflicted or was it on the way downhill when you bought it?
Stick with it though mate, it's worth it for the day everything works and you're on a perfect road!

It's back now after having the headbolts retorqued and a few new hoses fitted. Took it for MOT at a Porsche Indy near me and after adjustments to the handbrake & headlights it went straight through. Long may it work, I'd love to go on a big road trip in it this year! MOT friendly headlight cover after one blew off on the M4...

Ah, it is always fun getting a car going again which has seen little use over the years. You should hit a point where things begin to get better. I was going to catch up with yourself at RRG but there is always next time. The car looked great however it had to be said .

Time for an update! I've been enjoying the car lately and treated it to some frivolities with its new found functionality! Blaupunkt tape deck to be fitted (stolen from the camper) since I miss listening to all those cheesy tapes I accumulated during ownership of my white NA. Most of all though, I like how a tape deck clunks and the buttons feel proper, unlike the JVC CD player in there currently. Picked up a pair of black headlight covers from Cotswold Porsche breakers. Lee, the owner, had a 924 S2 CGT rep with a charge cooler, plastic windows and not a lot of interior. Got a dipstick too since the rubber had split on mine and it was hard to gauge the oil. Took a guess that my wheels were from Design 911 and ordered some centre caps since genuine Fuchs ones don't fit. Replica ones fit snugly, they were expensive at £10 a piece but make a big difference. Replaced the aging wheel nuts with some metal ones too. Weight difference is negligible. Next thing to do is open up the bonnet a little more! I got some tin snips but after a practice cut in a hidden area it was clear the bonnet has a lot of filler and red paint underneath, which all flaked off! What's the best thing to do? The current aperture is so small, I'm sure it would make a noticeable difference to cooling/performance.

Try and get hold of a reciprocating saw, make sure blade is new, set on full speed but don't push too hard.
Lovely car btw,

Is it possible that the cut was made a little too far back? I guess secondhand bonnets are not major money for these? .

It was good to chat to you yesterday Chas! Made it to the Ace Cafe for a 924 meet. I'd been looking forward to it for ages, having not been to many car things lately! As always it was nice to meet up with the 924 owners and get a decent breakfast at the Ace. It was a bit of a mojo boost too, with even Ricky Caeser impressed! On the way home I got stuck in stop/start traffic for 90 minutes, didn't overheat and then blasting home along the M4 I arrived with all my coolant! It's the first time I've been on a long motorway run after the work has been done, and it pulls very well at those speeds. Picked up a replacement door seal and a factory airbox with all the fittings for the price of a breakfast too! Before leaving I even polished it!

The car looked really good Felix. Glad to hear it made it home without any nasty surprises. Hopefully you can just enjoy it this summer without worrying about it. Cheers Duncan

Thanks both! I picked up a rusty looking airbox off Andy and gave it a quick rub down and paint. I was surprised how expensive an OE filter is for it! Anyway, it really finishes off the engine bay nicely and is a lot more subdued than the K&N cone filter it replaces. I've cheated with the straps for now but Pete is kindly making another set of his metal ones for me. I washed off the remnants of my coolant leaks too. It's like the ship of Theseus: Interior wise, I have a new door seal from Andy too, what a difference that made! The old one was in two pieces and couldn't grip the door anymore. Now it's very refined inside. I sniped a mint condition arm rest for £20 on eBay and picked it up locally which was a result. I had a Momo wheel in my NA and liked how much stiffer & more taught it made the steering feel. I picked up a period Momo Racing Line wheel, which had a genuine Momo Porsche boss left on, all for £40! It's a little chunkier and more comfy than the 3 spoke, even if it's not to everyone's taste. I will have to get rid of that yellow horn button though! So a few inexpensive changes that have made a real difference

Looking good Felix. Are you keeping the K&N in case you want to swap back? Does the Porsche OE airbox reduce the induction roar (mine's definitely noisier now)? It is amazing how much better good door seals make travelling at speed. I can't believe you drive it to the Ace with a dodgy door seal - it must have been torture! I really like the wheel - I think it looks more purposeful than the 3 spoke. For some reason, the 3 spoke looks a bit tubby to me. My 4 spoke is disintegrating, and I'm thinking about getting it re-covered, so I need to get a boss for the spare Momo type wheel I have in the garage! I have a boss somewhere, but it's for an old style wheel! Cheers Duncan PS - it was good to meet you Chas - I've been following your threads on here for a while without actually meeting you. Sorry we had to rush off at the end.
