Part 11.1: ADAC Classic

Being camped up by the GP circuit we started small and ventured up there to buy our race tickets and watch some of the support races. I hadn’t really done much research on the N24 support series, but this ADAC Classic race was epic! A three hour race on the 24hr circuit configuration (GP and Nordschleife loops) seemingly open to anything pre-1990.
The field, much like Retro Rides, was properly diverse and HUGE! Like the main race this support race had 3 grids full of competitors on a staggered rolling start a couple of minutes apart!
The image below captures the diversity quite well: An MGB, 635CSi, Alfa, 911, Fiesta and a Golf. Better yet they were all fighting for the same piece of track!

Out in front were a gaggle of 911’s (934’s I believe, unless anyone knows any different?)

Hard on their heels were a hoard E30 M3’s – if you wondered why you hadn’t seen one on the road in years it’s because they’re all here being put through their paces!

Not far behind the M3’s was this 190e Evo

Slightly slower than those front runners, but still in touch were the Alfa’s

A few non-Evo 190e’s also put on a good show

And this pair of mk1 Sirocco’s really looked the part!

And a single Mk2 Escort RS2000

Then came the more obscure, less suitable “race car” cars, like this Ascona

As we went down through the grids the cars got slower, but they were still pushing hard!

Everything was lifting a wheel, some at the front and others at the back.

It turned out the Germans will race absolutely anything including Volvo 240’s and even a Mercedes 500 SEC!

Bringing up the rear were a load of NSU TT’s. While they may not have been the fastest they looked awesome!
N24_ADAC_Classic_20140620_016 by mwggriffiths, on Flickr
It’s fair to say the field of cars was impressive, but the commitment shown by the drivers was on another level entirely!
The 911’s in particular were either on three wheels...

...Or very sideways! Or often a combination thereof
N24_ADAC_Classic_20140620_019 by mwggriffiths, on Flickr
Due to the staggered grid within a 2 laps the 911’s and M3’s were overtaking the NSU’s and other backmarkers

The differing speeds and skill levels resulted in plenty of lock-ups, overshoots and near misses at Turn 1!

Back to the front, what I loved most about the 934’s were the paint schemes – so period and absolutely spot on for the curves of the cars

For the next “display” I moved from the GP circuit to the big-boy track, specifically the Hatzenbach section early on the lap.
I’m glad I did, because what came next was worth the hike!
