So its been a long time since ive posted, and in that time ive had a few cars but nothing special enough to post here. I recently sold my E36 convertible and after trying to buy this corolla for almost three and a half years i managed to get it.
Buying it wasnt straight forward though, after handing over the cash i went to jump in the car and realised the seatbelts ad been removed ( as with most of the interior i wasnt about to drive half way down the island with no seat belt so the previous owner got his socket set and put in the drivers seatbelt.
At this point you may think "ah, bet he had a nice drive home in his new car" well not really. The damn thing wouldn't start again. a ten minute wait while the previous owner went to get petrol (needle was barely registering) and i give it another go. Nothing it turns over but wont start properly, i jump out and fix the car by bending the dizy cap retaining clamp to keep it on the dizzy. Now you must be thinking that i drove off happy as Larry! hes got spark and fuel!! erm no. turns out the car will only idle with the choke fully out all the time. this has another effect, the throttle sticks wide open (something i only found out when i was driving) now i forgot to mention the exhaust gasket is blowing badly and that sounds epic, not good epic but the kind of epic thats written about in the bible.
my nerves at this point are all over the place, which brings me to the steering, it has a steering wheel that somewhere between the steering wheel and the wheels these parts have come to an arrangement where i make a request to turn in a certain direction and they decide to do what ever the hell they want.
Remember my throttle problem? turns out, theres another problem that idling at what doesn't do the car any favors. the fact that there is very little water in the radiator. yes my temp gauge was bouncing around hot and holy curse word curse word! i only notice this when I'm not far from home (by the way its raining and I'm driving through a low flying cloud) so i think sod it, ive come this far and make it home.
So ive had her a day now, and ive fixed the idle issue with a bic pen, it was disconnected and broken vac line from the carb to the rocker, put some water in the rad, i hope it stays in there i really hope the head gasket it ok . and washed a couple of lbs of curse word off the old girl.
Another member of RR used to own this and in no way is any of the above related to what he had done. i think he was the only one of the few people its gone through that actually looked after it.
How we met
and a instagram 1977 (appropriate) filter pic after a huge washing session.
exhaust/inlet gasket has been ordered, and I'm looking into fixing the steering (adjust the box and a new idler arm) if anyone knows what lowering blocks will fit let me know
the interior is shagged and it has no carpets, ive got a couple of reclining buckets coming tomorrow so may go down that route regarding looks.
