I'm halfway through my current project and hope to have it finished by the end of this year. I'm in the planning stage of my next project and want it to be reliable and cheap to run (gonna be a daily) Anyhoos, what cheap and relatively easy to find diesel engines (turboed or not) are available that will couple up to a RWD gearbox? Make don't matter as long as its an in-line 4 cylinder jobbie

Disco engine can be fitted with a LT77 RWD gearbox from a LDV 400. Also late FX4 Black Cabs had a 2.7 Nissan engine and RWD.

PSA XUD. Come in 1.8, 1.9 or 2.1 flavour, turbo or NA. Bolt straight up to an LDV Pilot gearbox (from an XUD powered LDV Pilot), often come with Bosch pumps which love SVO, and the 1.9 With a few cheap mods to the pump internals and a £50 TD04 from a Saab can make 160bhp+ with ease, 200bhp+ has been seen but not reliably. As for the 2.1, people haven't really scratched the surface of what it can do...
Loads of donor cars too:
Citroen BX XM Xantia Synergie
Peugeot 205 305 306 309 405 406 505 605 806
Then various Suzukis, Ladas...

Don't forget the Rover 'L' series lumps either. Plentiful and cheap and compatible with various RWD Rover, Landrover gearboxes.

Interesting suggestions there. Never thought about a gearbox from a van! Obvious really Quite liking the idea of a 1.9 TD PSA lump, quite nippy engines!! What about VW engines, any RWD boxes available for them? Also if the 1.7 Vauxhall TD engine fits an Omega box will the 2.0 DTi engine from Zafira/Vectra fit too?

VW diesel are used for Suzuki SJ conversions so adapter plates available to mount to both the 4 & 5 speed gearboxes. In case you didn't already know on the SJ the gearbox is a conventional RWD item with a short propshaft to the transfer box.

Just check the vans don't have stupidly low gearing, obviously the final drive can easily be changed to suit, but keep it in mind

The gearing on the LDV Pilot is a bit low, but not too low to cause a stupid amount of problems. Depending on wheel size about 3.8-4k at 70.

I've got an LDV Pilot gearbox in my turbo'd Rover P6, does about 2300rpm at 70mph in 5th, far from being low.

When it comes to commercial gearboxes 1st is uaually a fair bit lower than the car versions and 2nd is slightly lower as well but 4th is ni on allways 1 to 1 and 5th is overdriven, it's 99% the diffs on commercials that do the whole low gearing part of the equation. What vehical? engine bay size and ease of fittment can play a large role in deciding what engine/box you use, personly i'd forget the transit Di on weight, size and gearbox (B/H) size, i like the XUD and ford engines cos i know them but VW do a taisty TDi, just remember the later it is the more wiring it will have !

Apparently the earlier VAG 1.9TDi (1Z/AFN/AAZ) fit onto a VW LT gearbox.
