Sorry can't find the daft question amnesty thread but I need to paint my wheel centres and want to remove the wheel nuts to paint behind them but don't really want to jack up and remove each wheel and refit just to paint the centres (I mean the centre part of the actual wheel not just removable caps).
Will a wheel really fall off / cause damage to studs if I remove all four nuts? the wheel centre bore is the same as hub size too so would that be okay? also the car is completely grounded with the air suspension on full drop so not sure where the wheel could go to any way?
Cheers in advance for any safety / damage risks that I've not thought of!

Of course you can. If they're sleeve nuts they'll be a pain though and you'll not get them back on without jacking the car up and if they're normal nuts you'll have to jack it back up anyway to make sure you're able to nip them up and let the wheel sit where it wants before doing a proper tighten. If the car doesn't move with them removed they won't fall off. It could get nice and wobbly and interesting though.
So... I'd jack it up...

Ah I hadn't thought about getting them back in place to tighten up. Got a longer night ahead then...

If you jack it up high enough, you can often get two wheels off the ground anyway. Do a pair at a time, and you can get up close and personal a bit easier too

remove 2 nuts/studs from each wheel - paint let dry then refit - repeat for the unpainted bits. or not

Take all the nuts out all together and take a picture of what happens and post it up on here?

if your wheel fits right (ie on the spigot) the wheel nuts do not support the actual weight, but if you have swapped the wheels for something else... Just jack it up

Thanks for all the answers I did two wheels at a time and as it happened I needed to remove them anyway to make it easier to follow the line to paint.
Pleased with how they came out.

David every time I weigh a car in I have to take the wheels off as they would charge for processing the tyres,
I normally get all the nuts/bolts off before the forklift gets to pick the car up and every time the car drops on the deck or slews to one side on the studs,
At the very least you would damage rims.
