Just occurred to me that the Ford Corsair is quite overlooked when thinking about Fords, and I've never seen a modded one. May be a cheaper alternative to the Mk1 / 2 Cortina? I love the shape of them. ^ Closest to modded I can find on t'interweb. Minilites and luggage rack... ^ Consul Capri prototype, apparently an original Ford job. How rare?! ^ Period mods. Get yer pics out! Bonus ponts for modded ones. I can't find any!

youre right it is slightly overlooked and unjustifiably, its a nice middle ground between cortina and granada, I`ll bang some pics up tomorrow I`m on dial up for the rest of the night and don't fancy growing a beard waiting for them to upload.

There used to be a gorgeous one running around local to me many years ago. Royal blue with a tan vinyl roof, wolfies and 'V' shaped sidemarkers/turn signals on the wings (remember them! looked like army badges?) You're right. There doesn't seem to be too much out there Must be more somewhere?... Especially with the V4 replaced by a V6 or V8... I'd best check on the old Hot Rod sites, there's bound to be something in there ;D

that copper chopped one, Lee's pro streeter, seen a coupe of "kustom" ones, one was pink... Used to ocassionally see them in Hot Car and the like back in the day with Essex conversions but other than that not a lot of them about. I do recall a high-rider (like a gasser but show not go) Corsair back in the day.

They were mostly rusting away even by 1975, I think they were dropped from Ford's lineup because it overlapped with the Cortina too much. That sort of thinking is why Ford is still in business and BMC has gone bust They're quite short geared if I remember right - 70mph was a load of noise, but if you were cruising at 60 you were right in the power band for decent (for the time) overtaking

I do recall a high-rider (like a gasser but show not go) Corsair back in the day. I know the one you mean! I've got a mag feature on it from 1980-ish, luckily those mags are at the top of this week's pile. Some scannage required later methinks.

That sort of thinking is why Ford is still in business and BMC has gone bust Yep, the Corsair was effectively replaced by the 2 litre Mk3 Cortina. The Corsair was a model designed to replace the Classic and to some extent the Consul Mk2 (as was the Zephyr 4). It used a lot of Cortina Mk1 panels - the roof panel, windscreen pillars & scuttle, C pillars and door frames are all Cortina ones. I'm not sure if the entire Cortina mid section was used though. Always been hidden under the limelight of the Cortina, which is a bit of a shame. Definitely cheaper than the MK1 Cortina, not sure about the Mk2's as ordinary (non GT/Lotus/E) Mk2's seem to be quite cheap, certainly lower priced than Mk3's.

Obviously I don't know where it is, I believe OSC does but he won't tell me! Last saw it in 2001 and it was rock solid, just a bit of bubbling on the N/S door bottom.

I do like Corsairs. Remember only a few from when I was young, they seemed to attain wibblepoo-dom quite quickly and be just a knackered, slightly obscure car.
I’d definitely have one over a Cortina MkI/II. It’s a predictable look for a 60’s Ford (to someone who’s read a lot of 80’s Street Machine anyway), but they do suit a set of chrome Appliance/Cragar type steel-spokes. An Essex V6 would be a natural choice too.
Isn’t the 2000E model the one with the gearbox that was the one to have in any hi-po Ford back in the day? I imagine a lot must have died in that cause.

I think their popularity would soar if Hugh-Fearnley-Whittingstall got rid of his - who wants to have the same car as a nobhead chef that eats slugs and has a face like a bo selector mask?

Corsairs rock! - But I'm biased. There have been a few Essex V6 and Rover V8 examples. There were a few jacked up & muralled '70s specials too but most of these will be long gone by now. There was also a high riding, big V8 Corsair (not the one pictured above) featured in Street Machine many years ago which had actually been shortened - yes, really!! There are a couple of nice modded Crayfords knocking about - one with a 24 valve Cossie V6, the other with a 302 V8. As far as I know mine is the only Pro Street Corsair.

My dad had a midnight blue one that he traded in on a VW Microbus (earlier Baywindow) after my mother shot a hole into the bonnet one night when they went hunting for rabbits, this was the early 70's, or even on 1970-ish, when they did curse word like that, usually tanked up on 3 Ships whiskey, or rum, or what ever grown ups would drink at holidays by the seaside. He loved the shape, but I think the motor somehow did not deliver what he wanted, may even have had some weird semi auto transmission. PS: I was about 7 or 8 at the time.

My dad had a red '65 1500 with a vinyl roof which was 4 yrs old when he bought it, looked immaculate but was a complete and utter rotbox, I remember some guy in a PA Cresta/Velox pulling out of a side turning while we were on holiday in 1971 and hitting the OSF corner. The front apron disintegrated and all the wing was folded back, the PA had a dent in the bumper.
Also remember him having to have new inner/outer sills welded on it at 6 yrs old, then after passing her test my mum went out and bought a '66 V4 one in Purbeck Grey. That one was even worse (I remember getting a slap off my dad for popping the rust bubbles in the front wings) which, added to it being saddled with 1663cc of dog-rough pig-iron under the bonnet, meant after 12 months she traded it in for a Mk2 Cortina.
