Hello there! My first post, is a sad one... I have here for sale my 1996 E36 AMG Saloon, this rare and handsome beast has come to a crucial juncture in its life- to be repaired or used for parts. It recently failed it's MOT, largely due to rust and I've decided it's time to part ways as I need a road worthy car. I've had this car since September and up until the MOT it's been as good as gold, engine and transmission are great etc. but MB's rough patch around this time has really seen the body suffer over the years.
This car is definitely worth investing the time to do some good repairs and see it running into the future, but equally the parts (full black leather & black maple interior, 18" monoblock alloys, 3.6l M104 engine hand built by AMG w/bulletproof 722.3 4 speed automatic, four pot front and two pot rear calipers etc) it has to offer would make it ideal for breaking up and giving other cars a lease of life, or to use the parts in some sort of conversion (I did briefly map out a 190E-that-never-was type project, it's been done in the states- engine mounts in the 190e are identical etc!).
MOT faults are as follow:
Reasons for refusal of a Test Certificate:
001 Supplementary Restraint System warning lamp indicates a fault [5.4.2] (I blew a fuse when mucking around with the stereo and tripped the warning light- just needs to be wiped on a STAR computer)
002 Nearside Track rod end ball joint dust cover excessively deteriorated so that it no longer prevents the ingress of dirt [2.2.C.1c]
003 Offside front upper Coil spring mounting corroded and seriously weakened [2.4.C.3c]
004 Nearside rear Brake pipe excessively corroded [3.6.B.2c]
005 Offside rear Brake pipe excessively corroded [3.6.B.2c]
006 Offside front Brake pipe excessively corroded [3.6.B.2c]
Advisory Items:
007 Nearside front upper Coil spring mounting corroded but not seriously weakened [2.4.C.3c]
008 Nearside front Road wheel with a slightly distorted bead rim [4.2.A.1a]
009 Nearside rear (on limit) Tyre worn close to the legal limit [4.1.E.1]
010 Front (corroded) brake disc worn, pitted or scored, but not seriously weakened [3.5.1i]
011 Rear (both cracking) Brake hose slightly deteriorated [3.6.B.4d]
012 Offside rear parking (secondary) brake imbalance requirements only just met. It would appear that the braking system requires adjustment or repair. [3.7.A.6b]
013 O/s mirror loose
014 O/s/f door only opens on second pull
015 O/s/f sill jacking point corroded off
016 O/s/f body mounting corroded off allowing arch liner/bumper to rub on wheel
017 N/s/f bumper mount/inner wing mount corroded through
018 Nail in offside rear tyre
019 Oil leak
Some of the above will obviously take longer to fix than others but to tackle the main failures would probably only be a weekend's work, plus some preventative maintenance throughout the year to keep her ship shape. Either way you're looking at a lot of car for not a lot of money or outlay!
Aside from the above the car is rather tidy, various panels are showing spots of rust around the edges (arches are coming up a bit) but the paint itself is in good nick and benefits from just having been clay barred; leather interior is great, with very minimal wear to driver's seat etc. 18" monoblock alloys are currently shod with winter tyres all round which are particularly good in the wet, wheels were refurbished in October, but I hit a pothole on New Year's eve (advisory no.008) which blew out a tyre and the wheel sustained some curb damage as it rolled off the trailer I bought it home on and the tyre came off the rim at the last minute, but with a replacement tyre on it's not so noticeable. The car is fully HPI clear, has also just had the headlights refurbished and comes with a spare oil filter and German style pressed number plates. I ran a compression test on the car when I got it and got good readings indicating a healthy head gasket (one of the only major problems on these engines), the oil leak I believe is down to a leaking timing chain cover gasket, these cars also don't suffer from the deteriorating insulation seen on the W124 wiring looms either which can play havoc and eventually need replacing (second hand looms alone go for ~£350!).
There were only around 220 of these produced worldwide, with (I believe) only twenty coming to the UK in right hand drive, with less than half those still on the road making them comparatively rare against the E55 and without the self-destructing-at-120k five speed auto, less weight up the front and better fuel economy (sees 25mpg on a run).
The car can be viewed most days/evenings in Bitterne, Southampton with the exception of this weekend (26-27th), heard and seen running etc but with no tax/MOT I can't give any test rides, equally for collection it will need to be towed or trailered.
If you have any questions then please don't hesitate to ask, check out more pictures on my photobucket (link above), cheers!
