So I have this.... Not a real one, just a pretty good replica based on a 24v Carlton GSi. I'd like to change the engine for something a bit different - preferably straight six and supercharged/turbocharged to stay true to at least part of the concept of the original Lotus Carlton. I'd also need to have a manual gearbox, I'm not really into automatics. At the moment I'm thinking about a Jaguar XJR engine - the early straight six one. Not sure if they come with a manual gearbox option though? Anyway, would any RR's like to throw any other ideas out there as to possible engine/manual box combination candidates? I'd like to spend no more than £1k buying the parts to do the job, most of the work I can do myself thankfully. In the meantime, please enjoy this picture of a Lotus Carlton with a LS1 V8 Corvette lump!

You could get a manual box on the Jag AJ6 straight 6 but they're pretty rare, I think the XJR may have been able to be fitted with the manual box too but they'd be very rare again
I suppose if you want a boosted 6, then the 2JZ and RB26 should be contenders?

Any sort of SBC would be my only choice, Keeps it in the GM family. Probably go for a LS series,

LS has too many cylinders for a start, however if you're wanting 8 and want to be different, a Lexus 1UZ is a corker of an engine.

Pretty sure most V8 options are out of my price range?
Certainly the LS series ones are from my research!

A blown straight 6 is a great idea. Jag or Japanese would be my choice for sensibly priced project unless you want to go down the route of supercharging the BMW E46 M3. There are kits available......

With a budget of 1k you won't be finding anything with a manual gearbox and forced induction

omega v6 is theoretically a nuts and bolts fit as its the same chassis, which also makes the bmw straight six derv that was available in them bolt-in too.
the v6 is a pretty rubbish engine anyways, the older straight six is better.

The LT77 5-speed was probably more common in the smaller engined XJ6 saloons. What about a BMW 6 (should be more common in manual and cheaper?), or a Volvo 960/S80 I6 - the twin turbo was good for 260bhp.

X300 Jags used a Getrag manual box. 4.0 and xjr used a stronger box ( Getrag 295 I think), 3.2 manual cars used a Getrag 265 I think.

$1000 is not going to get anything noticeably quicker than the 3.0 you have now, double it then you can have some fun.
