Quick bit of advice needed... My fiancée had her Golf written off by some muppet in a white van yesterday. We had the car recovered to our driveway specifically after reading horror stories on here about cars recovered to compounds, fees etc. Anyway, as the other party is liable and we are making a claim for the written off car, the local valuation garage has asked to collect the car and take it to their garage 20 miles away to value it. Is this the norm? Surely the car could be valued on our driveway? We also wanted first refusal on buying it back if the possibility arises, and I get the feeling that if it's removed from here for valuation, we won't be seeing it again. Any advice? Also, if we do have to give the ok to take it away, I guess we can keep the tax disk? It's all new to us!

We recently had a company car written off. The valuation guy went to the reps house where the car had been recovered to. He wrote a report them some days later we had an offer from the insurance company of the cars value. At this point the company made the choice and a collection was arranged.

As the aggrieved party you are in the best position of anyone caught up in this unfortunate situation. Being the aggrieved party nobody has to force you to do anything.
I had a situation recently where my sisters car was driven into by an old man in a Rover 400. I wanted to send my sisters car to my preferred local bodyshop for assessment but the insurance company insisted they use their own instead. They made up some bull story which I bought which with hindsight I didn't have to believe. It was something to do with costs or guarantees or something. Anyway, in the end their way meant that my sister was driving around in a brand new MINI Cooper S convertible for about 3 weeks and she loved that. They took her car to a workshop 30 miles away. After about 3 or 4 weeks they said they'd have to write it off as it was beyond economical repair. It must have cost them a fortune to hire the MINI and transport my sisters car so far and then to pay out market value for hers.
Long story short, these insurance companies often mess things up so don't be afraid to insist that they do it right if you know what you want to do.

As others, definately don't let them take it, you wouldn't believe how much control of the situation you lose!

You are under ZERO obligation to release the car into a third-party's control. You have every right to retain the vehicle and request that the assessment be done at your preferred location.

Update - phone call made and she sounded rather surprised. However, body shop manager will now be visiting on Monday afternoon, rather than a bloke with a recovery truck. Just found out that the white van man has not informed his insurance company of the accident yet; cue fiancée starting to panic that he will try and wriggle out of it. Fingers crossed it works out...

Look at it from their perspective , if they take the car and keep it then they can then put in for storage fees etc etc , which all bumps up the overall cost and claim .. This also means they can forward any work or correspondence to their 3rd party's also Just a money making scam If you will

My Audi was recently written off, it sat outside my house for 5 weeks whilst I swanned around in a brand new Merc. It was inspected at my house and when they offered to take it away until the payment cleared I just told them I wanted to keep it. No hassle.

Yup, like most above. Keep it on your drive, They will give you a courtesy car - (usually) and that will cost them daily, So they will be eager to get it sorted. Its your car, not your fault - make them do the donkey work - Tis what we all pay em for!

as above keep it, one of the reasons they want to recover the car is yes eventual storage costs but the garage will probably be classed as the insurance companies authorised repairer or agent, the damage assessment can often be done via photo or video link, and they don't have to send out someone to physically see the car, if the car was then subsequently written off and you were paid out the car would/could go onto there closed shop auctions sites using the photos taken by the garage.

I would be pro-active in this case. Make sure police have full report and details, and if you know who driver at fault's insurers are, contact them. Unless he/she has inclined towards paying for claim from their own pocket instead.

I don't know if it still applies but no reason not to but you used to be able to charge the insurance company a daily storage fee even if its on your own drive.

Assessor coming that afternoon to value the car. I gave it a quick wash as it cleans up a treat. I guess he'll be more interested in the bent front end though. Anyway, it's just occurred to me that the car is still logged in my name (it was my car for 12 months then my fiancée took over with it for the last two years. Is this going to curse word up the claim, potentially? Am wondering whether I should quickly send off the v5 stating change of keeper 2 years ago. Getting a bad feeling as about the whole claim!

Don't forget registered keeper and legal owner are not the same ......as long as she is actually covered it shouldn't be a problem? If you visit moneysavingexpert.com there is a long thread on there about what insurance companies can and cannot do with your car.( you may have to search for it)
