Golf mk 4 GTI reliable or not ??

I used to have a mk4 gt tdi 130bhp and loved it. Great to handle and was great on fuel!!
I got to a stage where every time i was on the roads, i would atleast see 2 mk4s within the space of 5mins . I think the mk4s are to common now and so i changed to a nice bmw 318i with the m3 kit. Was superb to drive and looked awsome but now more of theese are common on the roads and can pick them up cheap. I'm now currently with a bmw 2.0l touring and now about to play around with this!!

Had a mk4 goof 1.9tdi boggo spec.

Bought it from a farm and it looked like it. More mud on the inside than the outside, never been serviced and a nest of some variety in the airbox.

Things I had to do / fix...
1. Full service (relatively cheap if you do it yourself)
2. All four electric windows needed fixing. These seem to come in the form of a entire door panel with the motors, runners all there. Seem to remember a used ones costing about £100.
3. As Dez mentioned the trim sucks... Ended up buying a gti spec interior for £100 and a set of vw 16" alloys for another £100.
4. Coilovers £200.

Great on fuel, thrashed it everywhere, parts are cheap from gsf and everything is always available (including sumps luckily as went through enough of them).

The only bummer was very occasionally and entirely randomly would go into a kind of limp/limited mode where it wouldn't go over 65.
The internet offers plenty of suggested fixes from AFM to cleaning out some valve thingy of which I did none.

So of its economy in a budget yet presentable guise and don't mind spending the occasional weekend day fiddling with something annoying (like bits of wood holding up your windows) then buy a goof. I'd certainly own another... Maybe

FYI mine was probably the 90bhp but really pulled like a train even loaded up to the point all 4 mud flaps scraped the road!

*edit* wibblepoo pic + it was on 220k and engine was fine, no leaks, no smoke, no funny noises. All the shitey black rubber on most of the interior had worn off and looked pretty gash though

Seat leon is basically a mk 4 golf , I had the 1.8 turbo and it was fairly nippy and handled really nicely
