I work for Only Motors, a motoring website and film production company based near Reading. We are looking for anyone with a cool car or an interesting story to tell to feature in our Motoring People program. You can watch the Motoring People films we have already done hereWe have no agenda, we just want to tell a good story. Ideally, you will be able to come to our offices near Reading on a Tuesday to film, but we have flexibility for something really interesting. At the very least, the film will appear on the Only Motors website. If you are interested, e-mail team@onlymotors.com I'd post a few photos as penance, but I don't have a Photobucket account. Just to redress the balance here, do you all think people get paid to go on gameshows? Or to be part of the audience for Top Gear? Or any show for that matter?
Likewise, do car owners get paid when their car is featured in a magazine?
Have a think about that....
Sounds like an interesting project. I'll send you a PM with some details of a vehicle I'd be willing to drive to Reading, unpaid, if I'm free on a Tuesday (which I usually am)
It if you don't mind coming to Bristol, I have a unit full of 'interesting' cars, all with good stories. And probably quite a few other car owners who'd be willing to take part too.

People consider having their car featured as an honour, and getting paid to have it photographed is laughable. |

...and provide you with free content...? *n Surely that would be only if you set up, filmed and edited your own feature? They are asking to feature cars in the same way magazines do (as pointed out above). Someone once told me that I should pay the cars that come to The Gathering because they are what makes the show. I can see that point of view, but the relationship should be symbiotic. My suggestion to people that don't want to give these people "free content" is to not take your feature worthy cars to them, your own quiet little protest... everyone else can make their own decisions. |

I'd love to get one of my cars filmed & photographed for free by a bunch of guys who are passionate about cars, unfortunately I'm far far away and both cars are absolutely not feature-worthy at the moment. I wish you guys good luck, I'll watch your videos this week-end  |

It's a very well put together site, the features on there will keep me busy!
I cannot help regarding an interesting car as my car is only a year old, so by default is very boring!
I have been lucky enough to have a car featured in a magazine in the past (Performance VW) as part of a group feature. It was an early start and a late finish and freezing cold but I thoughly enjoyed it. It was a, dare I say it, priceless experience!

Hey, the job's half-done for you, Grez. Take a look in the Reader's Ride section. If you spot something suitable for your needs and it's in reasonable travelling distance, why not PM the owner?
It's good you've posted material to show you're a genuine operation. I must say though, that in these days of internet scams, you have to work hard to prove your intent is honourable. It's a sad fact of modern life.

I've been on both sides of the fence, working as a freelancer (often for nothing), occasionally getting paid (sometimes in inverted commas), after long, drawn-out arguments. I am now gainfully employed for a publication, and while working for free didn't land me the job for certain, it definitely helped. The 'work for free' mentality pervades the entire media industry. I'm not saying it's right; I'm merely stating what happens. Media is an unreasonable industry, with unreasonable expectations. It's compelling, though. It has a draw, glamour, kudos - even. People want to be a part of it - sometimes, if they stick around long enough, they get paid. You have every right to disagree, but someone will always be more than willing to step up to the plate. The company I work for is unusual in that it pays its placement interns. Many - including the BBC - don't. We have a tiny operating budget - that's one of the reasons why my salary is so low. I'll bet you a moderate stack of coppers that you earn more than me. That said, I get to spend every day doing (and writing about) what I love, so there are fringe benefits. Now and again I'll end up at an incredible event and get a few quid on expenses for buying a sandwich on the train on my way back to the office. I also get paid to go to car shows. Does this mean you should offer these guys content for nothing? It depends. Companies vary as to how much they pay contributors. Sometimes (more often than not) it's for free. On other occasions, you might get some fuel tipped in your tank or a lunch provided. If it's nearby and you're bored one afternoon, I'd probably go for it. If was on the outside of the industry (and to be honest, I'm on the fringes of it) I'd use at as opportunity to network. In this case, the terms are stated. If they don't suit you, don't take part. There's been many, many occasions on the other side of the fence where I was expected to work for free. I had to stop doing radio placements for this very reason - I had nothing in the bank. There was no money and job at the end of it, but they needed the man-power and I had to fight off ten other candidates to be there. Was I stupid to do it? My bank balance certainly thinks so, but it looked good on my CV. Results may vary. Had it not worked out, I would have found something else. You can't work for nothing forever - I wholeheartedly agree. Now and again, it's permissable. When my company requires content, we travel to the company \ car involved, so the inconvenience to the other party is minimal. Sometimes that isn't possible, like in this case. It'll be an interesting day out, and no - in many ways, it isn't fair how content is generated. Then again, no-one's forcing you to go. The question was asked, and your reaction is understandable. Believe me, I've been there. Done that, and turned 'opportunities' down, because I didn't have the money. If you can spare some time without it rendering you brassic, forget the coins and contribute. 'A lot' of people will disagree with me, but that's just how things are. |

Likewise, do car owners get paid when their car is featured in a magazine? Have a think about that.... I've had a free 12 month subscription from the relevant magazine for each feature I've had so yes I've been paid, well sort of. At the end of the day, to end up with a car that a mag wants to feature, most owners have spent a lot of time and money on their car. The magazine then benefits from good feature cars by way of increased sales so I think it's perfectly reasonable to ask for something in return. If I'd been told no then the feature wouldn't have gone ahead, no skin off my nose. |

I have had a few magazine features over the years, nothing spectacular but even a letters page mention and photo of my late dad's Mini put a grin on my face.
I also got "paid" for one article where a certain Mr Pollit travelled to come photograph and interview for a publication.
I would be happy to have to Chevy featured in a publication again.
