Just posted the NIP for doing 37 in a 30 and would like to avoid paying this particular tax again. The Viva has wrong size wheels (they look nice though), a ford box, Vauxhall speedo and a cable made by mated 1/2 Ford half Vauxhall outers with a Ford inner IIRC. This undersandably struggles to give a smooth needle movement. All in all a curse word arrangement to give anyhting like an accurate reading. I could get the speedo calibrated but this will cost quit a bit if I remmber correctly. I have looked at Phone apps(android). there are hundreds and no way to tell the best etc. I came accross this (http://www.speedview.co/) when searching the site for any experience/recommendations. Thoughts, ideas experience on phone apps or other ways to get an accurate speed reading in the car. Have a picture of said nice wheels

I had a similiar issue in my P100, (car box and speedo drive) simple and cheap answer is as said sat nav, i have a £20 navman in the dash that show current speed, used it for a week and then simply re marked the speedo lense with white dots for 30, 70 ect

Why not use a pushbike speedo mounted unobtrusively ? A wireless version would allow it to be sighted anywhere - say in corner of rear view mirror ?

I think GPS speedos will lose accuracy going up and down hills. Someone correct me if I'm wrong...

Only issue with the GPS speedo option on its own is going through tunnels where signal is lost = no speedo at all. On my one car which has a very unstable speedo I use the GPS option but have retained the original speedo so I have some sort of guestimate beyond engine noise when in GPS-free zones. There are plenty of electronic speedos designed for motorcycles which use a wheel sensor, like a pushbike system but built for the higher speeds and mechanical/electrical inferference issues that cars and bikes have, may be a good alternative?

the wireless bike speedos don't work too well on cars - too much metal in the way, and too far from the hubs for most to even pick up the sensor. But the bike speedo (the wired versions) is a damned good way to get a pretty accurate speedo - cheap too.
Don't forget, you need a speedo to pass an MOT too, and I'm not sure if a GPS based one will pass (due to the tunnel thing mentioned)

Another vote for Speed HUD, the best freebie GPS speedo app I've found.

Thanks for the replies gents. Much appreciated.
I will be keeping the current speedo for MOT and a rough mileage covered for insurance. I will investigate suggestions over the next couple of weeks.
BOLF - Nice but way out of my budget :-o
Speed HUD loaded need to buy a suction phone holder....

I use a Talex Lite GPS Speedo, you can get them for about £30 on eBay As a bonus its small and if you're handy with the solering iron you can do interesting stuff with it, like fit the display in place of your dead fuel gauge

Mate got caught speeding in his Herald convertible (this was mid 1970's). Police officer asked him if he knew what speed he was doing to which he replied no as speedo not working because he'd disconnected it to keep the mileage displayed low. He got another (£5) fine, on top of speeding fine, for none working speedo !
