Has anyone put a 300tdi in something RWD? I have an engine and an R380 LDV gearbox but my engine is from a disco and the bellhousing is too long to just swap over? Anyone got any good suggestions as to what bellhousing to use? It's going in this

You need a short Defender bellhousing off any early 4 cylinder upto the 200tdi, going by Sam1990's link 300tdi bellhousings are too long like the Discovery

I put that together for a mate on his project, but it never happened in the end. I think all 4 cylinder Defenders upto and including the 200tdi are short bellhousing, so you only use the standard off the shelf clutch etc. The only difference is you need to make a new spigot bush to replace the large Land Rover pinion to the small rwd LT77/R380 type pinion. I think the rwd R380 should drop straight on, but you will need to check the end of the pinion does not bind in the end of the crankshaft, a common issue when going from LT77 to R380. All you need to do is make a spacer shim to go between the bellhousing and gearbox. I think that should cover it from memory!

The LT77 bellhousing from a defender is shorter. Land Rover used a longer bellhousing in the Discovery due to the depth of the bulkhead compared to the defender one. When they changed to the 300 Tdi, they used the same bellhousing in both discovery and defender so they didn't have to produce two different ones.

I've just won one on eBay for £5
I did think about a merc lump and I'd love one but it would be a bit long to fit under the bonnet and I still have to leave room for my feet in the cab

the landy LT77 box was fitted to 2.25 petrol,2.5L petrol,2.5 N/A diesels, the Turbo diesel and the 200tdi, the 300Tdi had R380s. All defenders, had shorter bellhousings and discos had the longer ones as stated earlier due to bulkhead. The bell housings from all the LT77s are the same stud pattern and should be ok to fit the 200Tdi straight to, now the interesting bit is the 2 wheel drive side. This could be overcome by using an LT77 from a MGB and using the bell housing from a landy LT77 as they should bolt together from memory, nothing a good old bit of "improvising a temporary, permanent solution" wouldnt sort for you I hope that helps you out some more.
