I believe that some vw LT vans (the ones that look like the first generation sprinters) use a development of the land rover TDI engine but in 2.8 litre form, most used 5 cyl 2.5 VW/Audi engines but some had the 2.8.
I seem to recall land rover sold the designs to a brazilian company who developed it into a 2.8 and then sold it to vw who needed a higher power engine than they had available at the time.
Perhaps a gearbox/bell housing could be sourced from one of these.
