Evening everyone!!
Been a looong time lurker on here, but rebuilding an old Audi and not knowing any better I thought I would document the build on Classic Audi where I thought I would get the most support parts & stuff. I wanted to join and say hello as the car is finished and ive just bought my tickets to the gathering and
If your interested in the full build you can find it here: www.classic-audi.co.uk/forum/showthread.php?t=15705
All this said I'm not all about Audi's I love old retro cars what ever the brand as long as its Low and fast or old and interesting!!
The reason this particular build came about was that after selling a Beach buggy I built, I had nearly enough cash and room to find buy and restore my grandads Audi Coupe GT5S he promised me before he passed away.
This was a car he bought from new as a retirement present and owned for over 20 yrs, unfortunately he lost his sight towards the end when my Uncle took ownership and then he sold it for a Triumph Stag probably 10yrs ago as my Grandad had never told him about our little deal and unfortunately at the time I didnt have the funds or room to take it on then.
Luckily for me my uncle sold the car locally and the fella that took the car only owned for a short time before getting Banned for drink driving and parked the car up and left it to rot. As much as this was a problem as the rot took a hold it was probably a life saver as he didnt look after it when he was using it so it probably would nt be around now if he continued to use it!
So the interesting stuff, I have had to a nut and bolt rebuild on this car to cut the rot out completely and like most of us, I couldn't put it back together standard. I know these cars are getting rare and certainly mine being an 81 with the quad headlamps rarer than most but being my grandads car that he used to take me to school in & holidays in, its all about the memories and I wont ever be parting wit hit ....hopefully so the residual value isnt really important to me - sorry purists!
My problem to overcome was if I left it standard 105bhp FWD ijust would have lost interest in it. So tastefully modding it keeping the essence of the car but making it fun was order of the day.
Its taken me 3 years and its nearly finished....sort of! I did all the resto in my single garage apart from the paint, the interior and some of the electrics but has all been done on the tightest of budget which for the time being has run out
Now its all running I would love to get the engine rebuilt for a bit more power but more for reliability as the Passat the engine came from had done 175k and then I doubled the power!!!
I few pics to get the ball rolling:
When my Grandad owned it:

How she is now:
I was lucky enough to have it featured in Performance VW back in January this year after finishing it for the Action Day at Castle Coombe and where it was noticed by the editor

Looking forward to fitting in, please don't hold back with your comments good or bad.
......Hopefully these photos work the preview button doesn't want to load, and its taken ages
