I`ve genuinely never seen a 1990 Golf GTi this clean. As the photos show, the paintwork is superb, the interior is pretty much unmarked, with the only "issue" being the headlining is sagging a touch in the N/S rear corner. Previous owners have even kept the original dealer number plates and rubber mats from new, with the original dealer sticker still in the rear window. In the past few years it has been retailed at some well known specialists, including Autobahn of Hexham and Classic and Sportscars of Malton.
The bodywork and underside are fantastic. It has never been welded, and doesn`t require any at all. There isn`t a spec of rust anywhere on the car. The panels are all the same colour red, which have a superb shine to them and all the panel gaps are correct. The original BBS alloys are all in perfect condition, without even the smallest of scuffs, and each wheel has a nearly new Kumho tyre on it.
The interior is great too. The seats appear to have very little to no wear at all, and the carpets all look to be almost new. Pedals, steering wheel and gear knob are all wear free, with the MFA working as it should. Being picky, and as mentioned above, the headlining is sagging a touch in one rear corner. Not a big job for a professional to glue back up. There is also a monir crack on the plastic top of the gear knob.
The engine starts first turn of the key, every time. It has plenty of torque, just as the 8v engines should. It sounds lovely, and has no funny noises or signs of overheating at all. The whole car is a pleasure to drive, feeling very tight and just how a low mileage, standard Golf GTI should. For anyone who likes fiddling and cleaning, the only place this car coould be improved, IMHO, is with some detailing to the engine bay. At present, it looks like an engine. I might have the rocker cover painted, but it could also do with a real good clean/going over. I never steam clean engines, but I know some people are happy doing this and they get good results.
I have the original book pack with the car, with a handful of service stamps. I also have old MOT certificates and a VOSA printout. The car was off the road, being dry stored between 1999 - 2007. I also have a printout of all previous owners from the DVLA.
Genuinely, this car is only going to go up in value over the coming years. 80`s/90`s hot hatches will be the next big thing with regards to rising prices, with current cars showing the rise has already started. Ideally, this golf doesn`t want to be used as a daily. Have it garaged, and used as a summer/Sunday car. Keep up with the MOT`s and servicing, and it`s better than money in the bank!
