I don’t commute and I already have a stubbornly reliable saab sat outside so I need rid of the XJ8 I bought for a road trip earlier in the Year. It’s a 1998 XJ8 3.2 V8 Sport that’s covered 180k miles and is available for collection in York. I bought this from a friend who’d purchased it for his road trip to Le Mans, which was completed over 1300 uneventful miles. I took it off his hands for my trip to the Goodwood Festival of speed, which ended up taking in 1000 miles and was equally uneventful.
This is a fantastically wafty cruiser with comfy leather interior that doesn’t entirely betray that large mileage. It’s mechanically surprisingly sound with no smoking or difficulty starting and has no knocks from the suspension. Obviously this is a high mileage pushing 20 year old jag so it’s not perfect but it’s characterful, reliable (in my experience) and looks great (from a distance)
The MOT runs out in November and as the tax expires at the end of august it’ll come with 6 months tax on it.
Good stuff
Starts first time (my partner just started it after it stood for a week, on the button)
Drivetrain doesn’t feel its age
Gearbox does what it’s meant to without hunting around
Roof lining still where it’s meant to be
No nikasil problems manifest, temperature stays solid
No problems with cambelt tensioner
Oil and filter change 3k miles ago
Still feels very much like it has its full 240hp
V8 noises
Decent tyres all round
Bad stuff
Drivers side electric window takes several stabs to persuade to close
Glovebox, when opened, makes for the floor at speed
Some loose trim, occasionally hits you in the shoulder under hard acceleration
25 mpg (what did you expect?)
Exhaust blows slightly
Rust on a couple of wheel arches
Superficial rust on front suspension mount
Alloys need refurbing
Air con doesn’t work, maybe just a regas, maybe not.
Drivers seat belt doesn’t retract. I can confirm it works after going for the clutch with my left foot. Proved that the abs works too incidentally
I think that’s everything, have tried to be totally honest but any questions or clarifications please give me a shout.
