As the Ronart is nearly completed I have been given a new project - Another Minor! But this one is even older and from the Isle of Wight. It is in very good basic condition but I have to strip it down and restore it to virtually "As New" condition. So another thread is started..... Condition as delivered - with a lot of spare parts!

Wow Phil, no messing about! I had one of these early ones for a while. The amount of work scared me rotten so I moved it on. This re-build has my attention.

As the Ronart is coming to an end, this can take its place in the bookmarked category.

Quick question - the body shell and panels are to be resprayed, so what process is best to strip and prep the panels? Sand blast is possibly too harsh, Soda blast? Other blast or some type of dipping process - any recommendations? Anywhere in central England/Bedford region?

I've heard good things about pyrolysis, where they cook the paint off basically. I've also heard bad things about dipping, seams bleeding through after time etc, not to mention the cost. If it were me, I think I'd be looking to soda blast and epoxy prime, but it's something that's definitely worth a proper amount of research before you take the plunge. Looks like a remarkably solid survivor, I shall bookmark and follow with interest!

seconded glen, don't strip the protection from anywhere you cant repaint it ! (i.e seems)

Soda blasting can be a little slow if using a home unit, but it will only take the paint off, not rust etc, as it's not harsh enough. Also it's highly unlikely to "work" the metal like glass or garnet will. It would be my choice as well.

Thanks guys - yes Soda blasting it will be and the steel is in very good order - I suspect that the Isle of wight doesn't do much road salting! I have stripped a bit more from the front end now.

That looks incredibly solid for a Minor, even more so if this is its first restoration. From the pictures it looks like it only needs localised attention on the paint rather than a full respray, but photographs of pale cars can be very misleading.
I shall watch with interest, it's one of the nicer variants of the Minor this one.

Hi Vulgalour Yes it has never been restored before and it is incredibly solid - but there are quite a few little patches all over the place so although it could have been "touched up" selectively externally to do a proper job means stripping to bare metal. Anyway now down to just the suspension on the shell. One interesting item was on the dashboard in front of the steering wheel. It looks like a warning light (- possibly for the semaphore indicators) but it has a winding of fine wire round the outside and no bulb inside..... seems too complicated and only came out with a struggle....

The body shell is now totally stripped. It is very interesting to see how the Morris Minors changed over the years from the MM to the 1000.

The bodyshell and panels are now being Soda blasted and so I took the head off the engine. It looks to be, not too bad, but it is going to be refurbished to "As New" condition. The gearbox is also going to be refurbished.

Back "on line" after house move and the Minor bodyshell has been blasted and primered and may be in paint? The gearbox rebuilt and collected. The engine rebuilt and collected. The front and rear suspension has been cleaned checked and refurbed - now also painted.....Pics to follow
