OK, I've finally got to get round to this. Fronts are pretty bad. tracking is out so that needs doing which rules out a mobile tyre guy. I've found a lot more choice and cheaper at 205 rather than 215. Is it possible to fit skinnier tyres? I dunno what my wheels are. Just some cheap steels. I'm guessing they came OE on the car (I still have the vauxhall hubcaps and its the low trim vectra- DTI rather than CDTI). Those prices you've been quoted, certainly by Kwikfit, seem extraordinarily high. If nothing is available readily in that size it may be worth looking at the extremely common 205/55/16 for cheaper options. Apologies, just notice surprisingskoda has already answered my above question. Hopefully the garage won't have a hissy about this.

So I just phoned ATS to say confirm the booking and double check its ok to put 205s on instead of 215s. They reckon it may cause the tyres to rub. Didn't make much sense to me but apparently so (even though they're narrower).
So, shall I just do it anyway? Or shall I put the 205s on and move them to the rear axle? Putting the remaining 215s up front (decent amount of tread left on them - Michelins). I hear you're supposed to put new tyres on the rear regardless of the car being front or rear wheel drive.
Or shall I stick with 215s?

OK, panic over. For me at least. I ordered some Falken Ziex ZE914 XL's (same size as my originals). £90 each at Halfords (literally because its the nearest tyre centre to my house). FWIW (interesting titbit) if I put 205s on instead of 215s (provided I stick with the original profile depth) I'll lose 1.7% of my diameter. Which would give me inaccurate speedo readings etc... (albeit not by much). I don't think it'd be that bad if I went with all 4 tyres but I'm only changing the fronts. www.miata.net/cgi-bin/tirescgi for more nerdy tyre things.
