Debating what method to lower my 88 bluebird. Mk2 golf coilovers are an option but as the rear shocks are pressed/welded in it will be a bit difficult to do them on the drive at home. I was going to cut the springs but I know some people run universal coilover sleeves. What would be better? I'm not interested in ride quality or performance... These words aren't usually related to an 80s bluebird anyway . I'm just thinking for ease. I think sleeves would be alright as I can at least adjust them rather than have one chance at chopping the springs. And that way I have the standard ones to pop in for the mot. Was just a thought, maybe I'm being an idiot? Haha

Yes, sleeves are much better than cutting springs in the long run as they're adjustable for height/stiffness. You'll need to cut the 'cup', but if you're good with a welder it shouldn't be too hard. Cutting springs is obvious, you're stuck with the height and if you're not happy with it, you have to spend more, you're also losing the absorbent nature of the spring's coils the more you cut off.

Personally I would never cut springs it's such a bodge job, if it's worth doing then do it right.

There's no point going to the trouble of fitting coilover sleeves if you're gonna just wind it down onto the bump stops. TBF even if you don't there's still not much point on stock shocks they'll be far too soft.

Haha firstly I speechless that you are not bothered about the ride quality or performance (read HANDLING) and the fact that you think you will need to change them back to standard to pass an MOT means that you also think that they are not road worthy.

TBF even if you don't there's still not much point on stock shocks they'll be far too soft. The idea was that I could put them on and be able to adjust the height to my liking rather than cutting a bit, seeing if its low enough, then cutting some more and going too far! Plus it means if I change wheels that require the car to be higher or lower then it gives me that option. It wont be going down to the bump stops... It'll be at a reasonable height I'm not interested in ride quality or performance...the springs. And that way I have the standard ones to pop in for the mot. Its an £800 bluebird not a track car or a rolls. I want it to be low and silly. Ride quality doesnt bother me and performance... well again i'll take out the £800 bluebird card haha. I use it for cruising around in so as long as they suspend the car and dampen the bumps in some way (not sitting on the bump stops) i'll be chuffed. It wasnt the fact that I don't think they are roadworthy I just thought it would save me any hassle with an MOT tester as it'll sail through with standard springs.

Have a look around but I do seem to remember that Silvia S13 stuff could be made to fit your Bluebird (U11?)

I figure I might as well post here instead of starting yet another thread about coils. Does anyone have some form of diagram/calculator I can use to get a rough idea of what kind of spring to get made up/search for in my book of lies at work? I want to drop the front of the Minor a couple of inches, and running Gemini suspension on the front, the simplest option seems to be shorter coils. I will probably end up cutting the current ones just to work out what height it should sit at, but it won't leave the workshop like that. I will either find some of appropriate length and rating or get some made up. So, calculators? Simple to understand diagrams? Have at me! Cheers, Matt
