I need another estate on my driveway, thought I could get by without one, but it has limited us on some of thehtrips we used to make. My 944's are currently my most practical cars, and they are practical, but both are too nice inside for dog duties, plus he likes to stick his head out of the window!! So, a cheap, medium/large estate is needed, up to £1k max. Initially I was thinking saab 9-5 aero or mg ztt 190, but I'm getting a hankering for somethinga little more ininteresting. My shortlist currently is: Volvo 240/740/940 BMW E34 Merc W124 Volvo 850 (maybe) Audi 100 I say 850 maybe, as I have had a T5 and an 850R before. My R was really nice and I'd jave to have a nice R or T5R again, which the budget may not meet. Any other recommendations or advice? Ultimately I want something roomy, good spec (stuff like heated seats, full electrics, etc a bonus), relatively reliable (I do my own spannering, but with two 944's it would be nice to have something cheaper to maintain), safe and good looking - with some nice wheels and a drop. Currently the 940 Turbo is probably top of my list, but are they as well specced and good inside as the 850's? I adore 240's but worry they are a little more basic and lesser specced, plus they rust. A relatively non rusty retro would be a plus!! Side note - I like a slushbox in these type of cars (although manual is fine) -.are the older Volvo auto boxes ok or best avoided? Anyway - I've rambled enough, any recommendations, helpful advice or inspirational photos - much appreciated

Forester in a more realistic price range: Japanese cars are awesome, if you haven't had one then you owe it to yourself! Also, if you are looking into the more retro side of things, there are a lot of choices, but they might be a bit thin on the ground in the UK!

Thanks chaps - I will check that thread out!!
My wagon history consists of: '93 Mitsi Sigma 3.0 V6 auto - lovely, big, utilarian motor - thirsty, but solid!! '96 Volvo 850 T5 CD auto - as above, but better specced and quicker. Only sold for... '96 Volvo 850R manual - loved it - don't know why I sold it! '04 Subaru Impreza WRX - Tweaked, quick, well built and confidence inspiring. Just a little lack lustre inside.
So on the back of that, a Forester would be up there, as would a Legacy. Just not sure if there are many worth having within budget.
Not quite as nice as the german/swedish alternatives, but still cool cars with good potential. I'll see what's about in budget!
Also - delicia. Would love one, but aren't they pretty thirsty and pricey? Mk1 Shogun I considered, but don't reallt know anything about them!!

I wouldn't discount the 9-5 aero, a friend has had two and both live on locally to him, both were 100 ish k milers and well under the grand mark without major issues.
deceptively quick very comfy and fair on fuel on a good run.
got an e34 myself, love it but do wish it wasnt quite as heavy, its not as good on fuel as I hoped but still better than a petrol one, it covers the miles effortlessly without punishing you.

Don't really have a bad word to say about my 940 turbo, its a bit dull but a good all round car, mines a pretty basic one but still has leccy windows, heated seats etc no idea about the auto boxes, mine's a manual, if you stay above 25-30mph you can leave it in 5th and pretend its an auto lol its a fairly torquey engine

9-5 estate - I've got a 59 plate chipped diesel and had the use of a W reg 2.3 turbo (not Aero) with 180k on it and it absolutely flew. Go and look for an Aero, autos come at a discount to manuals. While you're looking at Saabs, have a look at the 9000 hatch - plenty of space in the back for the dog, and tip runs. I miss mine, it was a nice old bus. Have a think about the late 960/V90 estates as well. Had a 960 3.0 24v, it was a fabulous old thing.
