I have searched the whole car but can't find my tax disc. I was at a meet last night and I'm pretty sure it was there before I left so I reckon someone must have nicked it
I know I won't need it in a couple of weeks but before we go paperless I'm wondering if anyone can do anything I should worry about with my physical tax disc?
google has not provided an answer - I bet retro rides can!

They may be able to put it in for a refund. Make sure you report it stolen, and get a crime reference number. Then phone DVLA, to see what your next step should be.

best they could probably do with it is try selling it on ebay, they cant get refund from it as they not registered keeper, report it stolen and notify dvla as said above. once you got the ref number from police you shouldnt have any problems with failing to display (ive now been driving around for 12 days with an out of date tax disc in the windscreen to see if it gets noticed or picked up)

You don't actually need to display one now anyway, I know 2 people that have bought new car's this month - both delivered with 12 months tax but no disc.
As said, just report it stolen, the only useful thing they could use it for would be if they are attempting to clone your car, what car is it btw?

Yeah, get that reported asap then - London + Mk1 Escort + Stolen Tax disk = Very suspicious
Look in the stolen section at the amount of mk1's getting stolen in the London area.

I know all too well - mine was nicked a few months ago and I stopped an attempted theft a bit before that too

Dumb question , but are you sure it didnt go out of a window when it was open ?
Also all that will have happened is so scuffer will have altered it with biro and stuck it in his corsa window .
Not good to hear that people may have been sniffing around again .Sleep with your window open and a pickaxe helm by your front door .

Out of curiousity , how long was it still valid for? Someone might be grabbing a long running one now to make their car look taxed for as long as possible... ?

Someone might be grabbing a long running one now to make their car look taxed for as long as possible... ? if thats the case they would also need to of taken / had a set made of the number plates. as most cars these days are done via anpr camera rather than the disk been spotted in a screen. and if the car has been cloned then the tax disc is the least of the problems, road fines, parking tickets, speeding tickets etc will all come back to the registered keeper. i was interviwed by police over an incident up north newcastle a few years ago about leaving an accident, at the time i was driving my father in laws auto 307 and was at work 150ish miles away. luckily the company i wrked for had cctv on the car park entrance, the local police came and viewed the footage to see that the car was parked up all day where i said it was.

I haven't displayed a disc in my vitesse for about 9 months cos it disappeared. (probably out of the window) I also discovered that it was untaxed (exempt anyway) for all of August. Including the gathering! Oops!
Taxed it a week ago and got what will be it's last ever disc, which shall be retained for posterity.

On the "report an untaxed vehicle" page on dvla website. It says that you cannot report a vehicle which is taxed but doesn't display the disk.

On the "report an untaxed vehicle" page on dvla website. It says that you cannot report a vehicle which is taxed but doesn't display the disk. That's because failure to display and failure to pay are two completely different offences, the DVLA are only interested in those that are using or keeping a car on the road and have not paid RFL. As for the original posters question I wouldn't be concerned about it as the disc of no use what so ever to anyone but do report it as lost as you can still up to the end of this mouth be fined for failure to display, which is a fixed penalty notice, but that is very unlikely as it involves a lot of paperwork that only a very bored anal jobsworth cop would waste his time doing. I have been driving the spitfire for a few months without displaying a disc and no one has mentioned it.

I used to Know a miscreant on our estate who stole tax discs to match stolen cars and buy dodgy plates and sell them on, but these were newish cars. But Mk1 Escort - London...I dunno Inform the Law, and DVLA as a matter of course, and your Insurance comp, just as a precaution. Just in the WCS you get a nasty letter saying a car in your name etc.. Was involved in something bad - Always think the worst me!

Many years ago (1981) I had the tax disc stolen out of my 1964 Sunbeam Rapier IV. I reported it to the Police and had to pay £6 for a duplicate. I also remember the good old days when you could tax a car every 3 months

I used to tax in instalments as couldn't afford a year in one go. The old green log book was stamped at the same time. You had to go to the local office or through the post. It's 40+ years ago and whilst I still feel it was quarterly I also think you could be right Anyone know the correct answer as I'm intrigued. Paul H
