Several months ago I needed to move a couple of cars and lots of spares from Surrey down to Somerset. Never believing in doing things the easy way I decided to buy a suitable tow vehicle, hire a trailer and do it myself. Then I'd flog the tow vehicle on. So I bought this beast off of this very forum. After sorting out an MOT, getting the LPG system running, and a set of new plugs to get it running better it got pressed into service towing the cars. It managed this, but not without the drama of the starter motor failing. It still needed a few things sorting including a couple new tyres, tracking set, a new button for the tailgate release and other bits and bobs (it is a Range Rover after all). But before I could sort these bits and put it up for sale, my wife's daily driver blew it's headgasket and the Range Rover got pressed into service as it's replacement. I continued sorting out bits and pieces on the car, including another starter motor after the second one failed, and a new radiator when the hot summer weather suddenly threw up a previously unknown over-heating problem. The car was put up for sale and though it attracted some interest, nothing came of it. At the same time it's shown itself to be a comfortable practical family vehicle so we decided to keep it. It's a base spec cloth interior 4.0 without AC electric seats or Cruise control. Epsom Green with a grey interior.

I thought the Range Rover was supposed to be a luxury vehicle, did they really sell them without air conditioning in 1995?! Amazing. Good luck with getting it fixed!

Well, it's a Range Rover so of course it's going to need some TLC going forward.
1. The suspension sinks down overnight. It had one air spring replaced at the MOT but true to form I'm pretty sure my dyslexic MOT tester got his nearside and offside mixed up (don't ask, they have a history of this) and the wrong spring was changed. Anyways, the air springs are pretty easy to change and not that expensive so I think for peace of mind I'll get them all replaced.
2. The head liner is hanging badly so I'm going to have to pop it out, clean it off and glue some new fabric on.
3. There's an exhaust leak where the offside manifold joins the downpipe.
4. The engine is running rich when on petrol. It only squeaked through emissions at the MOT so this need looking g at. First step will be to get the relevant software and a connector for a laptop and run a diagnostic on it to see if any fault codes are thrown up.
In any event compared to my Cherokee, the Range Rover has always felt down on power so I'm leaning towards sourcing a good 4.6 and swapping it in.
5. There's a few light scratches and blemishes to the paint which I'll see about buffing out.
6. Other than that I'm planning on some cosmetic upgrades starting with some nicer wheels and a swap back to orange indicator lenses.

Another one? Brilliant! Epsom Green too.
My 4.0 in the UK was the same on emissions, so I always tested on gas. But yes, Nanocom or similar is a must. It's a Godsend for me without a dealer of any use around.
Nowt wrong with a shifty upgrade in litres! Got to admit that my 4.6 is a different beast to the 4.0
Funny, I've just gone from orange to clear on the lenses. Jury still out on that, but as one of the old ones is damaged and was held in by Faith, Hope and Charity, I'll probably stay as we are.

I think it may have something to do with the exhaust leak possibly throwing off the O2 sensor. When I first had it it idled very roughly on petrol but this seemed to clear up after a dose of carb cleaner through the air-flow sensor. It had also sat for a long time before I had it and I get the feeling these cars don't like thst.

Use 'em, they love you-ish. Get all the intake side clean including the Air Idle Control and TPS. Made a hell of a difference to mine. Half an hour with carb cleaner, toothbrush and cloth well spent.

Yup, mine actually died on me on the drive home from picking it up. Came to a roundabout and as I slowed to a stop it stalled. Turned the key and nothing. No lights nothing. Was in the process if calling g breakdown recovery, tried it again and it started up and drove home. Never happened again.
That said I found out some months later that the accessory drive belt had been incorrectly routed and was slipping on the alternator pulley. Putting that right cleared up a few of the problems.

Well, it wouldn't be a Range Rover if it didn't throw up problems now and again, would it?
So I got a phone call from SWMBO this afternoon to say the car wouldn't turn over. It's already been through two starters, but when I got home from work and checked that didn't appear to be the problem. No, it appears the Ecm/BECM is out of sync. So now I get spend my money and weekend chasing around for the kit to get it resynced.

All sorted now. But my wallet's £150 lighter now having splashed out in a syncmate. At least the next time it happens it'll take approximately a minute to fix.

I got the Rovacom kit, given that the only LR dealership is likely to stick the connector up the exhaust than the OBD socket! Nice to have that independence.

I was lucky in that the chap supplying the kit was only an hour drive away so I didn't have to wait for it to be posted (my wife needs the car this afternoon).
They also do a lead to hook the diagnostic port up to your laptop so I'm going to get one of those next and the required software.
You're right about it being nice to have the independence to diagnose problems with these cars.

bit of a back handed compliment, but what amazes me with the P38 is how a very clean simple standard one like yours can still look elegant and stately. yet you get ones with a few scuffs and a set of "big alleeeezzz" that just looks like something a morbidly obese heavily tattooed woman with dank hair and row soverign rings and two staffies bouncing round in the back would drive

Hubba, hubba, hubba, what have we got here? And the worst of them. Despite being more rounded than the Range Rover Classic, or a contemporary Jeep, the P38 is still all straight lines and angles, and the wheels it came with are too amorphous for my taste. I needed something a little less like an ill-defined blob and a little more angular. I think these will do the trick.

I hadn't noticed your original wheels. Having looked, I don't remember seeing many with those. The new ones should look okay. A pal of mine had those on a silver 4.0L and they looked well. On my old UK one, the wheels were... ...which I could never get excited about but by the same token could never be bothered to do anything about them. TBH I only changed the wheels here because a) the 19"s gave a horrendous ride and b) I was severely limited in tyre choice. I could have gone for RR wheels but decided that is I was changing, I'd go for a set I'd lusted after for ages, but could never justify.

I can't even remember what they look like without looking. The new ones are in pretty good nick and were had for a very good price off of a certain auction site.

Oh the joys of owning a P38. A couple of days ago when collecting my son from school on a rainy afternoon, the rear wiper refused to turn off - after I turned the ignition off. Pulled the fuse to kill it and when I put it back in it stayed off. But now I need to spend some time chasing a gremlin.

The replacements you have I think are from the very base P38's. There used to be loads for sale at Land Rover shows for next to nothing as it's a more common move to change them for something of a larger diameter.
