Anyone know of the whereabouts of Mazda MX5 J770UNB?

I've tried searching for more info as I'm sure I've seen similar questions asked on here before, but haven't come up with anything useful.
Anyway, I'm trying to track down an old car which I sold a few years back and is currently sorn according to doovla.
Is it ridiculous to apply for the V5, and then see what happens? I'm hoping for a stroppy owner to get in contact with me, who I can placate and mention I am very interested in their car (which isn't worth a lot, but has lots of sentimental value).
Doable or very dodgy? Running out of ideas, and determined to track this car down.

From what I can see, this doesn't tell me much? I've even blagged dvla to forward a letter from me to the v5 owner stating I have 'important service records and history of the vehicle which I'd like to forward to the owner.' Still nothing.

My thoughts are be cheeky, apply for the v5 and await eventual snotty communication from the owner. At least I'd have some contact with them at that point?

to apply for a V5 you need to fill in form v5c - you would not be able to answer Q3 truthfully as you don't own the car so you'd have to lie. Making a false declaration to the DVLA is criminal offence.

Another scenario - you apply for a V5 and for some reason one is issued to you - you are then in the eyes of the DVLA, legally responsible for that vehicle even though you don't own it and have no control over it.

Like said above, requesting the details from DVLA sounds best - especially if you have a good reason to contact the current owner.

I've already tried that. Dvla forwarded my letter to the owner, for a fee. Nothing back.

I'm just frustrated, I guess, that there appears to be no solution to this problem, from this point onwards. I don't normally tend to give up easily, hence the airing of other ideas as potential solutions. The last thing I want to do is get myself in the shizzle; however, I can't see any alternative options, either. Have to call it a day, I guess....

And how, by your applying for a V5, will the owner be able to contact you? DVLA, don't write to him and say, "Joe Bloggs of 33 Acaia Avenue, Suburbia (tel [phone]) has applied for a V5 for your vehicle. Please confirm that this is OK or go round there and punch his head in. Please let us know which you choose to do."

If they have forwarded a letter to them and you heard nothing , wouldnt that tell you they either want to keep the car , or are not bothered ? Its not a problem for you to solve , unfortunately you cant make someone contact you or sell you something .

I suspect that a Sorn does not prove that the car hasn't been scrapped, the DVLA forwarding your details to the last registered keeper may prove nothing, the keeper may have scrapped the car and ignored you or have now told the DVLA that the car is no more and the DVLA haven't felt obliged to tell you.
If this car is an "old" car then is it not worth putting out somesort of generic request on various car forums requesting info?
If the car is old and sorned it might indicate that someone thinks that its too good to scrap or is stored awaiting work.
Has to be worth a try and, at least, its legal.

fill in the v888 form I did it a couple of years ago on a vehicle I own sent with a nice letter why I wanted the info cost a fiver I think. a couple of weeks later I had an envelope through the post with a photo copy of every logbook issued for the vehicle

That would have been for a car you were in current ownership of, right?
I cant see the DVLA giving you a list of previous owners on a car you no longer own, let alone the current owner.
That has to come under data protection.

So i think ive read this right your trying to get a V5 off a vehicle you don't actually own surely thats some sort of theft or fraud i don't think ive ever heard of getting a vehicle this way before if you cant buy it or the seller wont sell it just go straight to DVLA and basically take it via obtaing the V5 ........if thats not whats happening then sorry but it does read abit like that .....

MM , that thread smacks of theft to me , i don't think a car , a escort cosworth would sit by the road in a dodgy area for 2 1/2 years . More like it was in a garage , owner is in the forces in Germany etc , and someone wheeled it out and left it , to see if anyone batted a eyelid . Then it was claimed .

From my point of view bit immoral to just apply for v5 and if was my car ,I would welcome you to come meet for a chat ,then make sure you wasn't keen to re-apply ever again ....
Put the shoe on the other foot so to say what would you do ? Much better to pay and apply for the ownership details ,then send out a nicely worded letter to current owner explaining why you would like a chat over the car tbh..... As opposed to just sending of for v5 lol lets face it some cheeky toe rag did that to you would you want to meet for a polite chat

And that escos was owned by someone that spent some time under her majesty's pleasure for the record ,and if I remember correctly he found out what happened to the car and dealt with the situation so I'm led to beleive

For the record last car I applied for owners on I told them it was due to car parking constantly over a private driveway and wanted to send the owner a letter to ask not too park there

I thought if it was indeed there for 2 1/2 years without being touched it would mean the locals would no better , and take that as a warning . Unbelievable the amount of people saying fair play , good on you . I'm guessing they all have fords and wouldnt like it if it was on the other foot .

My conversation would not be pleasant , it would involve leaky grimy lockups in a dockyard , a blowtorch , boltcroppers , bamboo slivers , a wind up phone generator etc .
