I have known someone to do similar then months later the owner who had been away on holiday HMP Butlins reports it stolen and gets it back after the 'new owner' had spent thousands putting back in road worthy condition. the registered keeper is not the legal owner. If you apply for previous keeper details (V888) DVLA will be sent the docs to the registered keeper and I wouldn't risk applying for the log book for a car I didn't know was still about as already said you would then be liable for it or even get a visit from the police for committing fraud.

If you are the registered owner and somebody else applies for the V5 then DVLA contact you asking if legitimate - ie you have transferred ownership. If you don't reply to this contact then a V5 is issued to the person applying and a fine for failure to notify change of registered keeper is sent to the previous person. If somebody applied for a V5 for any on my vehicles I'd report to both Police and DVLA. That would mean no V5 would then be issued to whoever applied and hopefully they would then get into trouble for doing such.

And that escos was owned by someone that spent some time under her majesty's pleasure for the record ,and if I remember correctly he found out what happened to the car and dealt with the situation so I'm led to beleive Not true, he sold it to his mate who still owns it to this day I believe. The car was put on a private plate so the previous owner wouldn't be unable to track it from its original reg anyway.

HPI it, that should give current owners details. I wish ! H.P.I only gives details of vehicle,Outstanding finance, damage or export markers, Reg,chassis number, colour etc. Number of previous owners (and date of last change) but no other details regarding them....... There is no publically legal way to find current owner info.

Hope the original owner reports it stolen on the chassis numbers, Remember a bike at a local motorbike shop that was chained to a railing awaiting insurance after it had been rung up stolen during the MOT. Think that was a similar situation regarding the reg plate too. That whole escort sitation stinks! and the attitude of some of the morons on there who think its fair enough, Wonder how they would feel if they ended up in hospital or similar and someone just helped themselves... Not to mention the fact , we are allways told that registered keeper does not make you the OWNER.

Thanks all for the thoughts. It was only an idea, and looking at both logistics and morals, it clearly won't work. I've put it on a couple of mx5 forums and not had any leads. Guess I'll be putting this one down as a lost cause. My plan, if I'd been able to trace it, involved a surprise and my fiancée, hence my disappointment! Onwards and upwards I guess :/ I've posted a couple of photos of the car below on the minuscule off chance that someone on here knows of it. I've tweaked the title of the thread as we'll, so it should show up on a google search. Any leads, keep me posted! Cheers all.

Quick question how long does it take DVLA to decide a car has been scrapped if its not taxed or on SORN? does it stay on there database indefinitely? as ive tried to trace a few of my old cars and all I got was untaxed, blah blah blah I take it this means its been scrapped but DVLA not informed? I thought DVLA had to be informed of any scrapping ?
sorry for thread hijack

It's straightforward to see if cars were scrapped before sorn came in - they're either not on the system any more, or they date of liability is a random date in the middle of a month. Our old mx5 shows as sorn, so I would hope that it is still alive. Losing hope though.
