I'm looking for inspiration around a new engine and gearbox for my Manta.
Took a Mk1 MR2 out the other day and loved the way the 4AG engine just revs and revs. Hit me with some ideas!

Depends what you're looking for. Do you want stupid power, something so torquey you can put in 5th and leave it there or a 9000rpm screamer?

How much work do you want to do? Are you competent enough to wire in a new ECU and ignition system? How deep is your wallet? I'm currently looking at a manta hatch as a project, if it comes though it will be having a 2.0 zetec fitted and running ITBs or bike carbs, purely as I have the engine ready built and running a proven 200bhp last time it was in a car.

Saab B204 turbo engine - there is no other matching alternative, they're cheap, they produce 200+ bhp, the internals are very reliable and tough (up to 400 bhp) and they go straight on the Manta gearbox. The T5 engine (with the red coil pack) internals aren't forged, but has really good casting. There should be no fabrication work if the XE fits OK (I think it does), and there's no distributor to mess around with.

Yeah sorry I should put some meat on the bones:
Power - Somewhere around 150bhp. I could probably make do with a bit less Torque - Not that bothered about torque, I like using my gears! Competency - Wiring I can do as long as it doesn't have some sort of super duper system like Nissan use on some of theirs. I can fabricate engine mounts. I can sort transmission tunnels. I would get a prop made.
I'd not considered the Saab as I'm looking for NA rather than a turbo but it sounds very tempting!

2.0 Zetec on carbs will get you 180ish bhp, lots of revs and a simple conversion and wiring harness - must be pre-PATS though.

Easiest swap is the C20XE if the Manta you've got is a 1.8

Your biggest problem with a manta hatch will be if you want to swap over to injection. Getting hold of an injection tank is by far the hardest part with hatchbacks as so many of the tanks have rusted out now. If you can find an injection tank then the simplest option as you have a 1.8 manta is the late C20XE dispak on injection All you need is an engine £300-400, a rwd exh manifold £180, a clutch £150, a power cap, an electric rad fan and a fuel pump with new feed and return fuel lines You use your existing engine mounts, sump, water pipes, gearbox and even exhaust system (might need an adapter for size from manifold to system) Yes its been done a lot before, but there is a reason for this, its a really easy conversion and a damn good engine that looks at home in the manta engine bay. If you can't find an injection tank you can go to bike carbs, on an XE you need to front mount the dizzy or remove the heater box and fit something smaller, but you do get a 20-25bhp jump to balance out the cost and hassle. Or you could always go for the 8v vaux engine from an sri130 either on injection or even bike carbs. Would fit in using your exh manifold and has got to be the cheapest upgrade option (if you can find a good sri130 engine) Currently driving an sri130 hatch around as a daily and its much nicer than the 1.8 although not quite your 150bhp mark Lots of other things can be made to fit and i know of a few people sticking odd motors in currently but they are all having to do a lot of work to get them up and running Really depends how much time/money and effort you want to put into it. Oh and how different you want to be from everyone else. A lot of engines can be made to fit, but there is normally a load of work getting the sump to clear the manta cross member but keeping it all low enough to clear the bonnet. Then you need to make engine and gearbox mounts get a custom prop made up, most likely fab an exhaust manifold sort out the wiring, radiator pipes etc etc etc If you don't have a deadline for the conversion and have a garage to do it in then go for it, but there are plenty of people who have gone down that route and their cars are still in the garage years later (just look in the project section on OMOC). Me i prefer to have my car on the road to drive

3.0 24v Carlton/Senator used to be a common swap but there probably a bit expensive now, or the old school favourite rover v8, various power depending on the vehicle the engine comes from and a good V8 sound as well.

Id go with the bmw option, cheap and reliable, otherwise the usual c20xe option, 1.7 box and sump, will bolt straight in

I would also be going the c20xe route as there are lots of off the shelf parts available as it's tried and tested the engines have good pulling power, i am using 1.8 manta sump pickup etc to mount my c20xe into something rwd but I'm not saying what :-)

Me i prefer to have my car on the road to drive So true. So many projects start out feeling easy and achievable, they hit a hitch, get frustrating, get left in a garage... and never make it out again. I've known so many people over the years who have purchased their dream, then spent two years taking it to pieces, three years ignoring it, and then selling it for peanuts when the guilt and frustration got too much.
