I am hoping to get myself back into a retro/interesting car after a bit of a break and during my search I have found an XK8 with around 100k miles sometimes less can picked up for around £3-4k. Most seem to be well maintained and in very good order although I haven't actually viewed/test driven one yet.
Will one be a reasonable weekend/occasional use car (I have a modern) or I am missing something?
(On my phone so sorry for the picture less post)
Thanks

A mate of mine has had 2 and they are very fun and not bad on fuel for its size, we went from Nottingham to silverstone and managed to get 27 to the gallon

They can rot so check carefully. It's essential you lift the floor carpets as they can look sound when viewed underneath but double skinning means they rot from inside out and floor rot is one of the first signs there will be more to be found. Early models that are cheap should be considered as potential projects rather than amazing bargains. You can be lucky but on the other hand you can be stung so as normal "buyer beware". Yes - I fancy one as well but as Zeb says a XJS is another option

Watching this thread with interest as i have a soft spot for these. They must be at thier lowest price about now and unlikely to drop any further.... Big wheels some drop and they are win/win. Even the ladies love them...

I am a fan of the XJS and most jags to be honest, but the XK appeals to me, in addition to being nice looking and a V8, as I have a young family (1yo and 2yo, yes I am mad!) and I want the car to be enjoyed by them too so that means decent rear seats, child seats and rear seat belts.
I would think it would qualify for classic insurance I had 1995 BMW compact (not for long luckily!) a few years ago and that qualified believe it or not!
Liking the burgundy one a lot!

great luxury barge! Desperatly need big wheels a subtle drop and some throaty pipes though rusty rear arches are common as is gearbox isues with either failure to engage gears, banging into gear and gearbox faults showing on the dash. I still like them though

One of my associates bought one for £800, tatty roof, lacquer peel, left hand drive and in need of tyres.
I'd have bought it..... Even into the dizzying heights of four figure purchase prices, which I am allergic to, it's a lot of car. Sort of a rich man's cheap Aston.
Get one and make it amazing for the rest of us to enjoy please.

I was doing some research on these and even went to look at one on sale for ~£4K, be very careful about rust, rear arches, sills and I think the front subframe. The one I looked at had rust breaking out on the rear arches and was generally looking a bit sorry for itself, sounded lovely though. Early cars have some potential mechanical issues, check out teh web for buying guides and also the jaguar section of teh Pistonheads forum.

My brother looked at these quite seriously a while back, and there are a few things you need to look out for.
1. Rust, as previously mentioned and really to be expected when purchasing any car of this age, potentially. 2. The pre-2000 cars had issues to do with the Nicasil lining in the engines - although should no longer be an issue, due to modern fuels. 3. Chain tensioners on the early cars are plastic, and it's expensive should they go wrong, around £1k iirc. If you go to look at one, and can hear it rattling then avoid it. Later MK3 cars had metal tensioners fitted, so I'd either go for one of those (pricier) cras, or find an early one that's been updated. 4. Gearbox oil needs changing every 50k miles or so, and it's not an easy job (sealed for life 'boxes) - so preferably one that has had the oil changed recently would be best - it's really not a DIY job (apparently).
Not really that much to go wrong then, so you may as well just buy one! Loads of leather, style and a nice V8 = win,win and win. Plus, values have started to rise in the past 12 months, so potentially a few quid to me made?

Scaremongering at it's very best! Nikasil may have been an issue on pre 2000 cars, so the first two years of XK production. Any of these cars, if still running the original engine, will be fine after thus amount of time. Post 2000 cars will all be fine due to lack of sulphur in the fuel. If the XK is like the XJ, then the best car to buy with regards Nikasil is between January and August 2000 when the cars still had Nikasil liners, but the lack of sulphur meant they didn't get eaten away! Anyway, onto the XK conundrum. Although I do appreciate a good Jag, especially in V8 form, I'd be putting my £4k elsewhere if looking fir a weekend toy/cruiser. Either that, or save a bit more money and aim for the XKR! The supercharger makes all the difference!

I love Jags but the styling of these never looked quite right to me. They are almost there but there is something about the front and rear bumpers sloping upwards which I think looks wrong. I haven't yet seen a nice deep spoiler kits which effectively corrects this look.

It may be scaremongering but I have seen first hand just how pricey these can be to own (well an XJR 4.0; he could have bought something quite special for what he sank into that).
Electrics IIRC improved alot from the pre-Ford days on those, but some issues were never quite erradicated; rust is one but if you know where to look this is easy to spot.
The engine is the other. People moan about the Nikasil lined engines yet others have been doing similar things for years! The truth is that if the engine is fine now it should be forever. What is not so far are the iffy chain tensioners which seems to affect any car prior to 2000 as well as the water pump. Some specialists want a small fortune for doing this work (changing them to the more reliable and revised later setup) but there are some out there who will do it for around £500. Cheap insurance compared to the opposite.
I keep looking at potentially buying an XK8 but there is alot of stuff out there I would like to try.

BMW were the only other ones with Nikasil problem- Google autofills Jaguar and BMW soon as you type Nikasail. Insurance cheap - my mate same age ,living 4 miles from me was paying £100 LESS than my Astra 1.6 for his 4.2!
