Hey people, anyone fitted a new rubber and screen back into a mk3 cortina? Me and my brother tried for over 2 hours lastnight to string it in but just couldnt get it to go in! Didnt have much in the way of lubricant, used some gt85 spray, could this be the problem?? Any tips or info would be very much appreciated thanks folks, Ant

sex lube is pretty ace for these , reet slippy and no damage to rubber
sit the screen in the car , i don't try and put the bottom lip in first , get matey to push firmly on the glass and start in the middle at the bottom ,work your way to each corner then up the sides while he pushes
once its in and rubber has gone over the lip ..use your fist to thump on the rubber to seat it fully

I allways use para cord and washing up liquid to fit them but if it's a new rubber thay can be quite stiff, warm the rubber first in a bucket of hot water or heat it with a hair dryer. As a back up i have used plastic coated washing line, you want the string to slip past the rubber as it pulls it not stick so no hairy string! no point in lubbing then using sticky string I allways try and get the bottom lip over the metal as i seat the screen if i can but it's not that important but i do start from the bottom and pull the string as close to 90deg to the rubber as possable (parralel with the glass) to get it to lip over fully, at the corners i swing the string in a cirular motion to avoid cutting the rubber (corners are the tightest parts). Lastly are you sure it;s the correct rubber/where did it come from ?

Hey bortaf, only just saw your reply, thanks, pretty sure its the correct rubber, got it from retro car seals, all my other rubbers from there are spot on, the rubber was really stiff, especially in the corners, I'll soak it in hot water before I try again. thanks again everyone, Ant

If you haven't done this yet I would advise you put a few loops in the string, one in each top corner. Anything with a new rubber is tougher than using old one. Too much lube will have the glass moving all over the place. As you lip the bottom in it will ride up making it hard to lip the top in. If you do a bit of the bottom then pull a bit in from each loop in top corners it should stop that from happening. light taps from yourself or a mate using cupped hand as the rubber comes in. Don't bang it where the string is coming in. Don't know about the Cortina but the capri had big & little rubber depending on year. I had an Aston Martin specialist who wanted me to fit the wrong rubber/screen to his own Capri. Didn't tell me until I'd spent half an hour struggling with it. There was a big difference once I realised.

I always find with a new rubber put it on the screen at least two days before trying to fit saves a lot of grief when fitting as you are not fighting screen and rubber

All the other posts are right you need lots of pressure on the outside as you pull the string. Some people think you just sit in the car and pull the string around but its not as easy as that. Once you get started it will suddenly start to go with a lot of firm pressure and whacks. Only use your fist to bang home the areas that the string has pulled the rubber-lip in. Don't be afraid to whack it, the screens (especially the toughen ones)can take a lot more impact than you thing without breaking.
