ahh those were the days, i thought it was the vento that did the non-starting thing, not this? although we were getting through so many cars back then i can hardly remember. it did have the pound shop fablon wood down the side, but only on the other side! guess thats why the phot is taken from this side i did quite like it tbh, shame it was red. i remember it having a better interior than mine has got.

ade, tourings have alwyas been the one for me when it comes to e30s. prefer em over all others. what does strike me is how fast theyve disappeared round here though. i only know of one e30 thats jsut a 'normal car' for someone. all others are either in the hands of enthusiasts, or gone. i deliberatley parked it in a promenent position in the curse word down rain the other day to test it out. I'm gunna check all the carpets today, but afaik it doesnt leak. i was a bit worried about the sunroof leaking as the handle is broken and the seal don't look great, but it seems ok so far. The E30 near me is defo still a family car, it's normally driven by a middle aged woman. Do like a wagon, had an Alfa 156 as a company car and chose the Sportwagon as it looked far better than the saloon. It was green, factory lowered option fitted with the legendary 2.4 mjet diesel, nearly 200 bhp, so not far off what you're building. Great car, even better when you blasted someone out of a roundabout and thought 'you've just been left for dead by a diesel estate'.

I forgot about the vento... Yeah that was a dick too. Too many cars tho, 1 a month if I recall.
The 2door e30 would've been the one to hang onto. Recently seen the same houndstooth sport interior sell for £500!!!

Recently seen the same houndstooth sport interior sell for £500!!! part of the reason i canned my trade policy(that and the cost), it was getting silly. just constantly buying whatever just for a laugh, driving it a bit then punting it on/dumping it in the yard till we got moaned at about number of cars. i got what was considered a fair bit for that interior back then, easily what the car cost me, but yeah, would be a lot more now. probably cos they're not particularly hardwearing i guess, good ones means dollar.

nothing else major to report, still got a workshop full of fullsize american truck so i can barely move, more bits have been turning up though- some plates, it got an advisory last test on the front one being damaged so i thought id tick that off the list, tidies it up a fair bit too. bought some for the lupo at the same time too, its only been waiting for those after the new front end was put on about a year ago.... just under 20 quid, the seller was making laods of claims about how they're the highest quality ones available, really deep, crisp pressings, only uses 3M materials etc. and you know what, i think they're right. well worth the money. then, i bought a spare one of these to take apart to see whats compatable with other pumps, as theres only so much you can lean off of the internets. its GWO so i can flog it on when I'm done with it- and lastly, ive been buying these as they come up. got a set now. two brand new, two lightly used but as good as new. renault megane/scenic 16" steels. vial statistics are 4x100, 16"x6.5" et49 so well tucked as stock, which is great for banding purposes as it means lots of width without too much poke. theyll end up a fair bit wider by the time I'm finished though

i used these guys- www.ebay.co.uk/usr/unit67?_trksid=p2060778.m2749.l2754if you look at the pics closely, the letters are much deeper and sharper edged than a lot of others- ive seen some recently where the letters are just kind of a 'dome' rather than flat topped, which look rubbish. on a par with german plates, but UK legal, obviously.

ha! yeah, i can just imagine what the guy you got it off was like though. ive got rid of most of his 'touches' now, but its the lingering smell in the interior that will be hardest to shift. my dogs got in there and where asleep on the back seat whilst i was changing the door (update shortly) and when they got out they smell like the inside of it does.

some other little bits ive done. ive not quite got everything to rip into the front end yet, i want to buy a fair few bits new (engine mounts, trackrods, arb links, etc.) which all adds up, and i cant afford this month. so, ive been getting on with more 'restoration' stuff. when i initially agreed to buy the car, i looked on that there ebay for a door to replace the passenger rear with the big shallow dent, as realistically it was beyond repair. there was only a red one on there though. a week or two later, just before i went to pick up the car, i checked again and there was another had just been listed, in laguna green, off a 1994 car, just under two hours away(peterborough), for £15!! i quickly buy-it-nowed it into submission, and sent the guy a message saying id be round for it once id got the car and checked there wasnt anything else i needed, as he had a few other bits too. yesterday was the day i went to collect, and i ended up at a bodyshop down fengate which is kinda low-end fairly grubby industrial area with a lot of garages and bodyshops and stuff. it was run entirely by eastern europeans of some sort, who where really nice guys, well into their mercs and beemers, and had some quite nice stuff lying round. a garbled half english half polish (i think) conversation ensued about our lupo i went to pick it all up in- they were impressed by the lows and the economy/power of the tdi engine. the young lad i'd bought the doors off was the son of the old guy who owned the bodyshop from what i could gather, and he had two e30s stashed at the back, one 2door his was restoring to stock body-wise but then dropping in an m50 and 5 stud converting it, and a 4 door as well. but anyways, i ended up buying both rear doors of him for 15 quid each, as they were identical to mine but with less dents and no rust on the bottom, an entire set of boot carpet/liners etc for another £15 as the was cleaner than mine, even though i only really wanted the speaker grilles. i had the tailgate for £15 too, purely because it had a mint, unbroken wiper setup on it. the tailgate itself has some bubbles but probably not as many as mine, so i think i will get the problem areas blasted, paint it and then swap it over at a later date. i swapped the rear passenger door when i got back, got to say its probably the easiest door swap on any car ever! very impressed with how well thought out it is. I'm sure most of you who have even changed a door know what a ballache it can be trying to do it by yourself- balancing the door on your foot or a jack whilst you get the bolts in, then slackening off and tightening the mounting bolts 300 times whilst you try to get it somewhat alligned. none of that here, it took me as long to swap the black door card over to replace the grey one on the new door as it did to swap the door itself. all you have to do is remove the circlip and pop the check strap pin out, unplug the wiring (which there is a little hatch behind the seatbelt strap on the B-pillar to get to it, so you don't even have to remove any trim) and push the rubber conduit for it out, then undo a 10mm bolt out of the middle of each hinge, and lift it off the pins. i dropped the other door back on and it lined up pretty much perfectly! seeing as this update is a bit lacking in pics, heres one of the new door fitted- colour seems to be quite a good match, but a polish will help. there is one small dent, about 1.5" on the bit where it starts to wrap to the arch, but it hasnt damaged the paint so i might get one of them paintless dent removal people to have a go at that. certainly looks bettter than the stoved in example before anwyay! i then swapped the door card over for the black one, and that was that. after that i had a go at trying to make the tailgate wash-wipe work. the wiper works, the pump motor makes noise when you press the button, but no liquid is forthcoming, despite the tank being full. i took the hose off and blew down it and it seems ok, so i guess the pump has failed? need to pull that lot off so i can bench test it properly really as its in an awkward place to get to, down inside the rear 1/4 panel.hopefully its not a touring-specific part and i can swap on a normal e30 pump to get it working.

These are ripe for engine conversions, being basically 325i running gear from the factory irrespective of engine actually fitted. Looking forward to to seeing the diesel conversion. Here are a couple of its siblings:- L reg Laguna Green 316i auto built into a 318iS Touring built for a customer:- L reg Laguna Green 316i Manual built into a 320i Touring to use up loads of bits lying about. Currently advertised for sale here. Both excellent shells.

yep, i agree. the build quality seems particularly good on these late tourings, they have a LOT of seam sealer and rustproofing absolutely everywhere.
interestingly i was debating a set of the black plastic SE skirts, as i always feel they need 'something' round the lower edge given how much the sills roll under, think that pic may have just swayed me.

yesterdays little job. in between other things, i decided to have a play with getting the rear wash wipe sorted. turned out to be a bit more involved than i thought! i read some online guides and they said about the pipe leaking into the headliner thing, so i thought id best check there first. i popped the hinge cover off, and bingo, it was a bit wet around the first non return valve. pressing the button made it bubble/froth around it, so i swapped one over from the other tailgate(which had presumably been replaced for the same reason at some point, as it was a small black one piece one rather than the big half white/half black original ones), and i found a small split in the short piece of hose after it that runs along the hinge. it looked like it had already been replaced once as it was clear and all the rest was black. heres that bit sorted- excuse the go-faster blue, i wanted to use silicone as its more flexible than rubber and shouldnt perish, but blue was the only stuff inn the right size i had laying round. its all covered up by trim though so wont look wibblepoo. oh, and if you're going to be doing this, get some of those O-clips shown above- they make jobs where you'reworking in tight spaces with small hoses 100x easier. i thought id best trace and check all the non return valves as they're known to be troublesome, so i took all the tailgate trim off. the next one just after the hinge proved to be ok, but the one just before the wiper motor was also leaky. rubbish pic, but this one- notice wiper motor is off there. this is becuase i now had water all the way up to it without leaks, but it appeared the waterway through the actual spindle was blocked. so i needed to clear that out next. top tip. don't try to remove the black plastic elbow bit on the back of the motor. they break- you can see the issue there though, that little spindle should have a hole up the middle, but its qummed up solid, with rust, sludge and got knows what else. to clean it out, you have to remove the motor and disassemble it, and clean out the black plastic elbow separately to the wiper spindle. the elbow was straightforward, i just blew it out with the airline. the spindle was a bit more tricky, it really was blocked solid. i found a broken bike spoke i had replaced to be the perfect size to fit up the inside, a good tight fit, i cut the end at a angle so it acted as a reamer, and i fed it through a few times from each end to dislodge all the curse word, then blew it out with air before reassembling the lot. reassemble everything, and you end up with this- the wiper cap/washer nossle thing is cracked inside though, as youd expect, so it leaks down the back or the car a bit. but still, ive only got to get another one of those, and the system is 100%, so I'm pretty happy about that. whilst working in the boot, i also found it had been graced with a towbar and what i think was a third brakelight at some point too, both of which had been removed, but the remains of wiring left in. the towbar wiring was scotchlock city- whilst the third brakelight wiring was high quality work- all of that was removed and re insulated before the trim panels went back on.

Love seeing things properly REPAIRED rather than replaced.
My Mrs's daily Focus auto box is playing up this week and I have diagnosed the fault to a solenoid in the box. My local dealer isn't interested at all, giving it the usual 'Sealed for life' blurb! I have mangaged to buy the parts from the USA for £39 and should take me no longe rthan 2hrs to fit.

This is odd. Really odd. I think i've just been given a sign from the automotive gods. 5 mins ago, I was on the phone to a guy who might want to buy this from me; I acquired it 2 weeks ago with the intention of putting a spare 2.5l lump in it. Had thought better of it, too many other projects on the go, and decided to sell. So I get off the phone, turn on the laptop and see this thread. Then flick the telly on to Quest, and Mike feckin Brewer is buying one too! I think I'm going to keep it now. Good luck with this, I'll be watching closely.
