Turbine location in the SpridJET is a much discussed subject amongst our little group. We've gone from front to side to rear with various pros and cons for all options. Of course theory is great but when the chassis is ready you've really got to make up your mind. The pros/cons we discussed endlessly were (and I'm sure you can come up with others) FRONT Pros : Classic location, reasonably safe if turbine lets go, already behind a firewall, easy to use propshaft, standard rollcage Cons : Exhaust routing somewhat problematical, not ideal weight distribution SIDE Pros : Ideal weight distribution, easy exhaust routing but not ideal, connect to diff easily Cons : Catastrophic if turbine lets go, need in-cab firewall and ballistic shield REAR Pros : 911 weight distribution, easy exhaust routing, reasonably safe if turbine lets go Cons : Need rear cab firewall and ballistic shield, need flipped and reversed axle In the end it's going in the front Does it fit, will we need to do much cutting? These questions are answered below Side view, we'll need to get the reduction box in and the belt drive from the box to the propshaft Should go in low enough. We have a solution. Undoing the drive plate for the auxiliaries allows the inlet to be rotated but typically none of the bolt holes line up and cannot be re-drilled as turbines and swarf do not mix. It will be slightly offset to avoid the steering column. The exhaust will be routed through the passenger footwell and out the nearside door. Not ideal either aerodynamically or for cabin heat but we can fix that.

I didn't expect it, but it looks like you could make it all fit within the car's stock silhouette which, in a weird sort of way, makes it super sneaky. All that plain metal is quite attractive too, looks like it's meant to be together.

The chassis work doesn't look too horrendous for an MG of this era though, at least it's all accessible.

An MG chassis coated in underseal to hide rust - That must be a first - NOT! But seriously, it is great to see progress Ian.

Absolutely mad. Absolutely brilliant. Jet engines are a self contained contradiction. The concept is so simple but the application is so complicated.

This is all very sad but........ It's passed on! This project is no more! It has ceased to be! Its expired and gone to meet its maker! Its a stiff! Bereft of life, it rests in peace! Pushing up the daisies! Its metabolic processes are now history! Its kicked the bucket and shuffled off the mortal coil, run down the curtain and joined the bleeding choir invisible!! This is an ex-SpridJET!! Why you ask 1) With the opening up of the Healey archives it deffo looks like I'm never going to find a connection between Healey/MG and gas turbines. No memo, no meeting notes, no private correspondence, nada, nothing, nil. 2) I work slowly because I have too little free time, too many other projects so realistically it's never going to be finished. 3) My partner in crime in this, Pete Farmer is going to retire soon. His back and legs are shot from too many racing crashes in Thundersaloons. Have a picture of two Healey legends, Pete and John Chatham**, both of them with sticks, Tramadol and mobility scooters now. 4) Part of the money for the build went on the Lenham. So I've got a Midget shell prepped for the Lenham bodywork to sell. It comes with the CCK bodywork, all running gear (wire wheels) but no engine and gearbox. If someone wants to take the whole thing over including the turbine it would have to be to a good home and we could talk a deal. Is this the end? Possibly not. Like @johnnybravo 's 'There be three wheels on my wagon' the thread could fork off into a different direction. Even if the big turbine goes I've still got the two 60shp fire pumps. What could be done with one of those? This is just hot air blowing in the breeze but...... Take one of these Remove and sell the body Bolt chassis and running gear to this Make gearbox adaptor plate, bolt up the 60shp turbine and get something like this Don't hold your breath but it's a bit like building a Lego car and that should be within my limited skillset. ** Ask me at the Weekender about the DD300 story - its too long to tell here

What a shame Ian - but "too many toys and too little time/money/mojo", is a feeling that some of us know all too well! Hope it does go to a new home where it may get taken further.....

There's a limit a limit to the amount of projects one man can muster - what that limit is - is a unknown quantity - it all depends on the owner and their capabilities along with facilities and not forgetting the all important finances - it's a sad sight when you hear of a hoard of projects that have lain untouched for many years come to the market despite the best of intentions of the owner. I think it's a very valid exercise to take stock and make decisions that may require the disposal of part of a vehicle / project inventory - It's something that is the top of my list for this year.
Ian - it's a good call - it's pointless having too many toys in the box and not enough time to play with them - (says the bloke that is writing this and has just bought yet another vehicle project to add to his 5 strong fleet of project vehicles)

That is a shame, but it is always better to be realistic about projects rather than burying your head in the sand. Your backup plan for the mini-turbines sounds good, although I always thought those frame kits (despite the ease of bolting them together) look a little clumsy tbh. I was researching an IVA friendly beach buggy for a school project and thought a UVA style build based on the floorpan with some bent hoops would be better looking and almost as easy (from this very forum - link)

I was researching an IVA friendly beach buggy for a school project and thought a UVA style build based on the floorpan with some bent hoops would be better looking and almost as easy (from this very forum - link) A bit off-topic, but the fugitive narrows at the front so wouldn’t be easy to bolt to a floorpan, also the fugitive 2 (as in the photo) would need a shortened pan, but a fugitive 4 should be possible, would need a fair bit of work though, so would probably be cheaper (those kits are less than a grand, and a rough fugitive would probably cost that and then need modifying). But it’s currently my fallback plan if the dvla rules change anymore. Anyway, sad to see the project stop, but enjoy the other projects, so look forward to reading about the Lenham (and in the future, a turbine sandrail )

it's a very valid exercise to take stock and make decisions that may require the disposal of part of a vehicle / project inventory Here here. Very sad news but sometimes it's the more responsible route to take, for the good of the vehicle being moved on or the ones sat in a bottle neck because of it. I am, frankly, amazed and more than a little mind-blown by the stuff you and many others on here tackle. It beggars belief... not only what you can do, but to how many vehicles at once. I always have been and always will be at my absolute limit in terms of capacity and capability by simply having one stock old car that can be driven (ie it isn't a pile of labelled boxes and some dreams), and even then I have to frequently take stock and ask myself if I can cope or whether I should pass a car on for it's own survival. So hats off to you sir, with your bewildering array of complicated doo-dads, for making a wise decision. I'm sure the various elements of this project will be revived and/or put to good us in some form to bring joy to somebody else. Goodbye Spridjet, whatever you were.

I've been following this from day 1...if only just to keep in touch with the Purbecks peeking out the side of the pics! But hats off to you for getting this far...I've got two car projects that are complete except for getting them to the MOT place...I havent even managed to find time to do that in the last four months, so goodness knows how you managed this, the Goddess and the Healey?
