Girlfriend needs a cheap runner, have seen one but how do I now do it with the change in tax rules?

I bought a van the other day. In a nutshell you have to phone your insurance to get that sorted and then get the reference off the green slip from the v5 then phone the Dvla. You can use the automated tax service but you can't set up the new direct debit system. You will have to buy six months so include it in your budget and have it in the bank.
Also make sure you have your card and the number for the Dvla stored in your phone. Don't bother with anything that doesn't have a log book as you won't be able to tax it until you get the log book back and that can take weeks.

You can tax a car at the post office if you don't have a V5.

The thing I don't understand is if it is already taxed by its previous owner then it will still be on the system. It won't be cancelled on the DVLA side until they get paperwork with regards to the new owner.
So in effect the car is taxed and on the system for 3-5 days? Meaning you could drive it home IF it was currently taxed by its current owner? I know its not strictly proper way of doing things and someone correct me if am incorrect?

You are 100% correct, it will still show as taxed on the system for a few days and the police don't have any interest in a car that recently expired as long as insurance and MOT is in force so the worse that will happen is the DVLA ask you to pay one months back duty if you haven't taxed it to cover those few days. (and yes the police do have the powers to seize untaxed cars before anyone says they don't but generally not until the second month of utaxedness has passed) |

The problem is you can't have tax without insurance so if the car isn't insured it isn't taxed. If you buy from someone who still has it taxed and insured then you might get away with it but for the sake of a phone call it's not worth the risk in my opinion. As for the post office you can only tax a car there with the green slip which you can do online or over the phone but without anything you have to apply for the v5 and you can't do anything until it arrives.
