A video of me and Molly Ringwald?
Nah, I didn't get a vid of the car today. When I finally collect it I'll rig up a couple of cameras and get a video of it in action. It wasn't worth grabbing a vid of it today. It hasn't had the carbs set up properly yet.

Picked the car up this morning. SPent the day driving it non stop. Went over to Goodwood to see what was going on there. Lots of Minis and Mini based stuff racing (ie Marcos', a Moke, a Mini pick up and an Austin (Mini) Metro), so I got to watch some free racing and eat Goodwood burgers. I didn't organise myself enough to take a video camera to record my car in action (on the road, not the track) but I did take a pic of it on the starting line for the Goodwood hill climb... Car is running sweet. I'm limited to how much I can push it due to the extreme head skim now, so I didn't push it above 70mph (okay, 80mph), but below that it seems to be running much better now. The carbs are still a bit sticky but things began to free up and smooth out as the day progressed (I've literally driven it non stop from 9.30am this morning aside from the hour's worth of track action I watched). I'll get a video walk around/start-up/tick over/drive uploaded soon. It sounds very good. A loud and deep beast of a noise. Sounds like it means business even though it's not allowed to go above 4500rpm for now. I've already sourced a second cylinder head and know where I can get a spare bottom end so I'm going to get those into the workshop for rebuilds to competition standards for next year.

I absolutely love this car. Must be so exciting to get it back - sounds like you gave it a good run today.

Great news. One of my favorite R-R motors. :-)

Good news on the replacement engine front as well. Just enjoy it for now though, it's a rare treat, this motor.

Cheers chaps. I'll try and find some time now to (finally) post up some more pics of the oily bits. I have a few layman's jobs to undertake but I doubt they'll constitute a worthy set of pictures next to the incredible build threads on here. I'm actually ashamed of how little I am able to do myself watching some of you lot rebuild entire cars from a single flake of rust you found on a lay-by somewhere. I will post up some good, bad and ugly shots of the best and worst bits though.
The other great news is that before I went on holiday I realised the MOT had expired while it was in the shop, so I had to ask them to arrange an MOT test local to the workshop. I had my doubts it would pass, and so did the workshop, but it past with only two advisories. 'Mild rust' and 'oil leak'.
MILD RUST? ARE YOU KIDDING? IS 'MILD' A REFERENCE TO HOW IT TASTES OR SOMETHING?
Anyway, passed with no work required. Another year of motoring lies ahead.

As a mate of mine who was an MOT tester used to say, as he handed over the certificate, "There you go Sir, another year of trouble free motoring", then burst out laughing!

I absolutely love Hawks, mainly because they're the closest aesthetically to a 55 Chevy and look great as Two Lane Blacktop tributes (almost better than the original Chevy imho for British roads at least, in the case of two 2LBT tribute Hawks I've seen in the flesh). I had the Hawk rather than the Snipe on my shopping list but this thing came up and I fell in love with it, and that was mainly due to the way it looks.
It would really be way beyond returning to original looks. The kind of money that would be required would be more than anyone would want to put into a Snipe anyway, but more importantly it has been quite radically altered over it's time as a competition car. The full roll cage itself has literally taken huge chunks out of everything, and there is no interior left at all. The engine is original but it has a floor shifting Ford rocket gearbox in it now and there is nothing left of the original column shift mechanism.
Really it's way beyond restoration. I would guesstimate it would probably cost more than 30k to return it to a vaguely passable original spec, and you can pick up an original spec Snipe for less than 10k so why bother?
It's a road dog for the rest of its life now. I was originally going to transform it into a Gasser, which would have pushed it even further from its origins. I quickly realized it has its own charm as a retired track car though, so I won't be modding it any further.

If this has 'history' I would explore an invite to the Revival. 1. You will have one of the best experiences of your life. 2. What ever you paid for it will be a small fraction of its worth after an appearance so a good long term investment. Also...I love it. Keep the race look, you are not a try hard, it IS a race car! Or, in yoof speak...Because Race Car.... Carry on... P.

Yoednz, I doubt I can be of too much help to your friend as I am not very skilled at mechanical stuff as others here will testify, but also my car has late 60's Jaguar XJ6 brakes not the original Humber brakes.
Will check out those links though and if I can help in any way such as putting him in touch with parts suppliers or anything else, I'd be more than happy to do so. Will also be good to say hi to a fellow Snipester!
PS I can thoroughly recommend the switch to Jaguar brakes to your friend! Not only are they a good fit/match, they work very well and parts are more easily sourced.

It has history but not at any professional level that would add value to it as an artefact. It's only ever been in the hands of what I would term 'amateur' / club level race teams though they took it very seriously and fettled the car considerably, competing in classic track events (I can never remember the acronyms for the different series it competed in).
It's not in track worthy mechanical condition this year, but next year... Hopefully. This year it will be at the revival, but stationary in the infield display. Next year maybe I can throw it round the track and show the Jaguar/Daimlers a thing or two.
Would love to get it into the race with the original Mini Coppers and the big Ford Galaxie 500s... Always my favourite race of the revival. Real David and Goliath stuff.

you are not a try hard, it IS a race car! With regards to this.... It came with race roundels, one on each front door and one on the hood. They had some screenprinted patterns around the edges. I took them off because I felt that it did look too'try hard'. I have since bought a set of plain black ones and a set of plain white ones, but I can't decide whether to stick them back on or not. I can't help thinking that would look a bit try hard and make me look like a tw-t. Especially if/when I break down at the side of a road ha-ha. Roundels... Yes or no If yes... Black or white? I personally like black as they have a 60's British feel to them. I would put 60 on in white or leave blank. Additional quandry... Should I go with the vinyl roundels I bought, or would it be better to paint them on with OneShot and then gently polish them back so they look aged and worn down? I think that could look really good but is a bit more permanent and despite look authentic it would actually be more fake! It's a quandary.

Great! Looking forward to it. I had a very quick squizz through those threads but not in depth as I'm in charge of my kids for the day and they keep ambushing me.
There's a great picture of a US Snipe on the internet somewhere. Very stock and original, but patina'd, lowered, and with redline tires on cool rostyle style rims... your friend's snipe looked like it was prime for that kind of look as a sensible balance with the decent interior it has.
It's very odd to me, looking at a proper snipe interior. Mine is well Mad Max inside... I barely recognise the way it's meant to look.
