Hello! First ever post here, been browsing for a while though! I'm a Mechanic in a BMW/Vauxhall/VAG garage and am pretty confident on the spanners before but have not a lot of clue when it comes to something like this! So ive got a Mid Size quad bike in my garage, with a nackered 50cc 4 stroke engine, don't have much room to ride it anymore, and i am rather big for it, so planning to do an electric conversion on it! Its currently got an 4 stroke engine, fully automatic with a CVT trans which is adapted out onto quite a large Sprocket with a 420 pitch chain, leading to the rear axle, so the fundamental parts are there! Just thinking, what motor? would i need some sort of voltage control, and a potentiometer throttle (if thats what its called) ? Thinking of using 2 Car Batteries, anyone got any awesome ideas? Id just like to have something rediculously fast just for a bit of a mess around due to winters being boring without a car license :/ Anyone got any ideas? Heres a few photos of it as it stands (Excuse the messy garage, its mainly used for storage, and also the Duct tape on the rear tires was a few years ago before the engine packed in, it was a drift shlaaag in the garage ) Thanks!

Yeah that's a good shout! But would the motor have enough power to make it any good? What about a starter motor from a car?
Id love to have a motor that would be far too powerful just for a joke, but then again I don't want to pile loads of money into something that's just for a joke

The batteries, motor and electronic parts that you will need to make a decent electric-powered quad would cost you more than just buying a whole brand new Chinese petrol quad, or indeed fitting a new petrol engine. If you want a project, I would recommend getting a used genuine Honda engine and fitting it in there. If you are still keen on going electric, then you need to find a source of good used electric parts. Mobility scooter parts won't be up to the job, but perhaps a golf buggy motor would be quick enough with the right gearing?

480 Watts is about 0.6hp though! The previous 50cc engine must have had at least 2 hp, so the drop in performance would be very disappointing.
Those Greenpower racing cars are based on the pedal prix format, so they are using ultra light, streamlined bodyshells to get to 30mph on a wheelchair motor. With a set of pedals, you could get it going faster than that! A cheap quad as pictured would be much slower.

You collect, arrange "Pony Express" or pay postage and I will GIVE YOU a new Chinese 500w / 36v motor. It was intended for an electric bike project and bought maybe 10 years ago but has been lying on the shelf ever since. Looks like this - Paul H Stoke-on-Trent

Yeah I hear you on the petrol power, but if I was going to go down that route I would probably use something like a kx65/85 engine around 20hp 6 speed, but where I live there is a long lane that leads to my house which isn't a public road and is perfect for messing about on, except the houses that line the lane wouldn't be best pleased, rode my CRF250 up there once and instantly had a complaint, so electric would be ideal! Some awesome ideas, golf buggy sounds interesting, what sort of wattage would I need for 30mph with plenty of torque to have fun with? The only other option would be buy a crashed 125cc 4T Chinese moped, and use engine carb and look from that as the mounts are identical! Thanks everyone so far super helpful

Not sure how helpful it is, but i ride a 20" Oset trials bike. Its made for kids about 12 and up (I'm 31 and 6ft). Its 1200w and originally came with 4, 12v, 10ah lead acid batteries linked in series to give 48v but i have converted it to use 4, 22v, 8ah lithium polymer batteries linked as 2 parrallel packs in series to make 44v and 16ah (they charge to about 52v). Even with the lead acid batteries it was more than powerful enough to throw me off the back with the throttle response turned up, and does over 20mph even with the trials gearing.
This is a vid of a guy using a stock bike to give you an idea.....

These are fantastic but at 1500-2000 pounds the price scares me!!!
