CHT sensor is usually gearbox end of the head, roughly central. Sensor itself has a 6-8in lead from it to the wiring plug as it sits quite deep. Probably easiest to see on a FWD Transit, think it's hidden by the PAS pump on Mondeos.

Diesels aren't my bag but a cheap addition would be to add a port on the exhaust manifold for a boost gauge so you can see back pressure at the turbo inlet . On petrol engines you can see twice the boost pressure at the turbo inlet as the turbine gets choked and that usually means high egt . Worked well when I was messing with a Vgt Turbo

2 stroke sleds use CHT and EGT all the time to keep track of fueling since widebands foul too fast. In this configuration CHT sensors are usually placed under the sparkplug so in essence they are sparkplug temp sensors. Another option is to drill and tap a hole as close to the combustion chamber as you dare..

I'm thinking that in your particular situation an EGT sensor would suffice, this would give you a clear indication whether you've gone too far. If however they are referring to a flaw in the engine cooling system, you could fit 3 normal coolant sensors front mid and aft in the coolant jacket and see if there is a built up of heat somewhere.

as long as coolant flow is good, and your coolant system is in good nick, then the coolant temp around the whole engine will only have a few degrees difference.

EGT on a diesel is one of the best indicators of load, and stress on the internals. If it's sustained at 600 degrees, it's *ok*, but not really ideal. Up to 740 degrees for 30 seconds is relatively safe, but any longer will often result in the pistons literally melting. Read between the lines on those guidelines, and it's all the info you'll ever really need for temps on a diesel

Just be aware - that thermocouples generally take around 15 seconds to reach their actual temperature. They will rapidly change to approx 60% of the actual temperature (often within 5 seconds) but take longer to reach their actual value:
