Evening folks. I've recently purchased an old school Turbo Technics conversion and the 1.8 8v from a mk2 golf in order to restore. There's some cool bits with it. Original badges Original pressure gauge. Service history for the engine. It hasn't been in a car for at least 11yrs and I'm a rank amateur when it comes to this thing, but I figure I'm not going to get a much easier turbo project to cut my teeth on. I need a hand identifying the turbo, in order to buy the right rebuild kit. This is the cheeky little number its heading for.. ☺️ Thanks in advance.

Nice stuff there - can you not ring them and ask, if they're still around?

Thanks guys.. I have emailed Turbo Technics, they weren't overly helpful, they said all there records get destroyed and they don't reconise the turbo. Thanks for the Midland Turbo link, I'll ping them a letter.. This is the only number on it, except the unintelligible plate.

Patent number will be for a patented part it uses.

Did a search, it comes up with this: High speed shaft bearing lubrication www.archpatent.com/patents/3058787From 1960's. Looks like your coupling photo thing: Also, it says 'remanufactured' which probably means it's an old rebuilt and sold again. It's possible it might not be part of the original Turbo Technics kit, I'm sure TT made their own branded turbos?

Hi, I did google the 409115 54 and it came back with some other forum threads asking the same question but from 3 and 5 years ago. A number of possibles emerged Saab, Volvo and T25/T28. But it was dependent on the size, shape, number of vanes and shaft size of the rotor. As it has been modified by the outlet pipe being cut and welded for I guess a different application, I would say it could be for anything.

Tip: don't try to rebuild a turbo yourself. Yes, you can physically swap bearings and seals, but you have no way of rebalancing the assembly - which you MUST do if you have any intention of having this running for more than a day (which even that, is no safe time limit from experience). No rebuild centre will balance a turbo they haven't built, for many reasons. Spend the <£200, and get it properly rebuilt. Fit and forget

Thanks peeps, still a little lost tho! Lol Tip: don't try to rebuild a turbo yourself. Fit and forget I appreciate the advice, it's my understanding that it's the shaft and impellers that need balancing and there's companys that offer that service. If the moving parts are balanced and the bearings are new it's just a case of bolting it all together? Think my northerns showing.. ?

nope, as that will only give "static" balance. You can only dynamically balance the CHRA, once it's all bolted together I'm afraid.
If a company offers to balance the bits individually.... avoid them. It's like trying to balance a wheel before you've fitted the tyre
