Car in question is a 1978 MG Midget.
Had it at a mechanics on the ramp this weekend gone and I was told that the ball joints have completely had it (front).
When googled or put into eBay nothing seems to come up for 'MG Midget ball joints' - are these referred to as something else?
Cheers, Andy.

Track rod ends are the same thing I think.

The only balljonts on the front of an MG Midget are the track rod ends (TREs) as stated above but I would have expected him to have said that. If these are gone I would go to someone like your local motorfactor to get a set. A few of the pattern ones I have seen specialists selling have been MOT failures within a year (generally due to cracked boot, but sometimes down to them developing play!). OTOH he may have meant the kingpins. Generally speaking if there is play in these greasing them will cure things. If grease is not enough then the kingpins are shot and require replacement (i.e the hub upright/stub axle). If they are like MGB items I would see if uprated ones (with needle roller bearings) are available. Before doing any of the above I would be tempted to go back and clarify where the play was ; balljoints have now taken over (to a degree) the job of the kingpins .

I was thinking track rod ends so that helps hugely, thanks! TREs do have a lot of play - I think i might approach a more helpful mechanic though

If your mechanic can't explain the difference between Ball joints and track rod ends its time to change mechanics, admittedly a TRE is a balljoint but they are not called that in the trade. (because people assume they mean a steering balljoint)

Hi, most garages/mechanics when dealing with people who they think are not mechanically minded try to keep it simple ie. good or bad, rather than them get bogged down trying to explain something that could do with being done soon. Even MOT failures will say excess play in steering, leaving you to find out what items at fault.
